WindowsXP question:
Is it possible to make wireless adaptors in laptops functioning similarly to a cross-over cable? If yes, how?
Thanks |

I guess you can not do that because to have two communication adaptor needs to work as access point as well as adpator it self so that other adaptor can connect and do work. |

Do you mean to connect two laptops to each other via wireless without using a wireless router/switch? If so then the answer is yes, you can make an "ad hoc" network using just the two devices.
The setup is pretty straight forward and is right in there with the other settings when making a network. I think you can also run the wireless network wizard and do it from there... |

Set them to peer to peer and they will see each other just make sure you share your drives and folders you want the other one to see. |

Oh file-sharing and printer sharing is fine, coz indeed ad-hoc was easy to setup. I'm actually trying to make use of the wireless connection between two laptops for gaming - much like in the old days when we use a cross-over cable. Is it possible using the wifi adaptor? |

A few things that come to mind.
A wifi connection is a network connection -- it doesn't care what you do over the connection, it just connects. From this it can be said that if you are able to share files, you will be able to play games.
To play a game a few more things may need to be checked:
Are both laptops on the same subnetwork?
Firewalls will block most games, is one active?
Once a game is hosted on one system, can the other see the game?
This may require the host computer be added manually, either by typing the IP address or "\\computer's name" into the server box.
Specific problems yield more specific answers, but in general -- yes, a wifi connection can be used to play games over. In many ways it is preferable due to the versatility.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but everyone I searched, it seems that a wireless router is needed for gaming (ad hoc wont let me detect a game). Firewall was disabled on both systems. |

I have done it with Halo for the PC and two laptops. (The free Demo version you can download from Microsoft.) My problem was, that I didn't have a mouse with me and playing Halo with the mouse pad really stunk. I got creamed.
We created an ad hoc network, and shut off the firewalls on both computers, loaded Halo, one person started a LAN multiplayer game, and the other browsed for LA N multiplayer games. Then w/o doing anything else, we were able to browse for active games. It listed the IP address.
