I got this note today...

"We regret to inform you that your submission to the Free Study XII challenge ("XXXXX") has been disqualified for the following reason:

Spot editing is not permitted in 'Basic Editing.' Please review the challenge submission rules.

Your entry has been reviewed by the Site Council and/or Administrators, who have confirmed that your submission must be disqualified.

Thank you for your continued participation in DPChallenge, and please do not let this deter you from submitting photographs for future challenges!"

I thought that the Free Study was "Advanced Rules" and, in any case, I did not do any spot editing on the image at all, and was never asked for a copy of the original unedited image for comparison!

Any advice on what I should do now?

maybe this is why my comments left stat has decreased by one. Did I leave you a comment?

First, sorry about the DQ.

Please remember that spot editing can be both taking away something and adding something. I'm sending you a PM to explain further.

If you (or anyone else) have questions like this in the future, please use the ticketing system.

The DQ was legit, but the listed reason was incorrect. The DQ was for creating elements that weren't in your original capture.

Can you be more specific?

I applied "filters" which I think are allowed under the rules. The filters do add elements to the image but within, I thought, the rules of the Advanced Editing rules.

I'm not looking to argue the DQ. Frankly, I don't have that much invested. I'm just hopijng to avoid similar difficulties in the future.

Adding lens flare.

You used a filter to create lens flare shapes that weren't in the original. The Lens Flare filter itself is legal (you could use it to enhance existing flare), but creating new shapes/objects is not. As far as I know, created lens flares have always been DQ'd.

Thanks for the clarification.

Look for my lens-flare-free images in future challenges.

To those still in...good luck gang!

Oh yeah, I've asked about that one before and was told it would be DQ'd.

I wanted to add a star busrt to this image:

Oh, please. I'm blushing.

Well gosh, while you're blushing, yours was one of two shots I gave a 10 to in the Image without Subject challenge. Very nice piece of work, that.

Just make sure you apply the effect to the entire image ... : )

Of course, you DID bump my current high scoring photo out of the top spot for the A620, so I'm not going to be THAT nice.

*grin*

A subtle point to remember about this for future consideration in your submissions is this... If your image already has SOME lense flare in it then you can highlight and adjust it with filters and other techniques under advanced rules. Just don't create something totally different from what was originally present.

ADDING elements, no matter what they are, is not allowed in either basic or advanced rules.

Where is the photo. I am curious now to see how to add that. Neat idea.

Ohhhhhhh them damn filters will get ya everytime.
