How about taking a Free Study challenge, and calculating which format produces the best results?

I'd be curious to see how it comes out.

Pretty sure the DSLR crowd would win...but by how much?

somehow have a feeling this idea will be challenged by dSLR users
and supported by P&S users. :p

LOL!

My reason for suggesting it is that in the few months I've been a member, I've seen some inconsistency in scores.

Originally, I assumed that the "better" equipment would translate into better scores. Over time I've seen that it doesn't always go that way.

Clearly the camera you use, and your skill in post-processing makes some difference, but talent and luck play a huge part, too.

Not always, but usually the case.
Yes, the photographer is the key factor, but often, the equipment may determine whether you get the shot, or not, or maybe you get a compromised shot.

Actually I think this might make an interesting challenge because then we can compare the winning photos from the dSLR and the P&S group :)

See, I have a P&S and a dslr, so I would just take pictures with both, and enter whichever was the better of the two. :)

hehe - of course, then we have lucky people like you :p
But I'm sure if the same scene taken with both cameras, you'd likely to use to one from your dSLR eh? low noise, sharper, etc...

When you are looking at 640 or even 720 pixel pics, the differences in resolution and optic qualities is very minimal.

The key is not only knowing how to use a camera, but knowing the limitations of the equipment you are using.

For instance, dSLRs would kick major arse in a low-light challenge, no doubt about it.

However, if we were to have a deep DoF challenge, P&S cameras have a clear advantage due to their short focal lengths.

In most cases I agree, except when a lot of cropping is done. My P&S has a bluish shadow (aberration?) in low light situations. I have yet to see this with the DSLR. But again, it's a special situation and there certainly wasn't a jump when I went with the DSLR.

Hmmm, that is an interesting idea. I may do that for my PaD tomorrow. If I do, I'll post the two and see if there is any discernable difference.

I agree that you have to know the limitations of your camera. I have squeezed some ok shots out of my wee fuji, but I am starting to feel like it is harder to compete these days. My scores are getting better, but it is difficult to beat folks who can do so much stuff in camera without the use of pp...
Karmat, I am anxious to see your results!

Well, I am not doing so well with my new dslr, and I believe it is because I still am struggling with what kind of subject works best. So far, both cameras I have do really well in macro and close-up, which the digital age seems to excell at. I have gotten great dof with both cameras, shallow or expansive. I have taken the same shot with both cameras as a test, and there is a definite better clarity and detail with the dslr. Still, a challenge that puts them against each other, say in basic with one being dslr only and the other being point and shoot, could be a great competition. I rather like the idea. I am supposed to sell my Sony H1, but I am really suffering separation anxiety and don't want to sell it. There are some subjects that really do lend themselves better to the H1 point and shoot, plus its got that great 12x zoom.
