A couple of months ago I entered a head to head with Talj that runs the length of WPL2. We have now got a 2 part financial aspect to this.
We are going head to head for a total of 12 weeks with a possible tie break (Sept Free Study)
Part 1 (and 75% of the 'bet') goes to the person with most victories in each challenge currently 4:2 to me but and 3/100's down tonight.
Part 2 was badly thought out, the final 25% of the 'bet' goes to the person with the best average score.
And this is our dilemma, we never decided if it was the overall average score (the one on our profile) or the average score from images submitted during the 12 weeks. T started with a much better average than I did but with just a few entries it is more volatile than mine, also the odds of the person winning the majority of weeks makes it more likely they will also win the average vote cast during the comp.
Which do you think we should use?

My suggestion is to go with your 12 week head-to-head average.
Anything else you've done (before or after) is not relevant.

you also need to decide how to figure the avg of the 12 weeks. is it each of your scores added then divded by the number of challenges or all of the votes added then divided by the total nubmer of votes? |

The actual scores awarded to winning photos vary so much from one challenge to the next (6.5 is the winner in challenge "X", whereas 8.3 is needed to win challenge "Y") that it could end up justifying part 2 of your wager.
If not, you might want to carry over the part 2 total to your next head-to-head, with improved rules.
Easy, see?

Txs Paul and Elvis. Yes, the average over the 12 weeks would all of the votes added then divided by the total number of votes - seems the most accurate way.

erm, that puts me 0.3 above you, the total average (of all challenges) would have put you 0.08 above me half way through the HTH (at the start of the HTH you were 0.57 above me).

To be 'leading' all week and then on the last day for you to take the lead was just a tiny bit more than gutting :o(
You do remember I was treating you to dinner saturday......anyone here able to supply 'something' to put in Andi's food??
Oh and before anyone else says anything.....I'm not bitter......much.....

One bottle of the XXX stuff is enough to send an entire battalion to the latrines with a case of the raging trots...

Have you considered, for your "average" calculation, the possibility of tabulating each image's percentile finish in its individual challenge, and then averaging the percentiles? This would be a yardstick of where each of you finished relative to the competition in the challenges you entered. IN other words, a 6.1 that finished in the 89th percentile would trump a 6.4 that finished in the 88th percentile, and so forth. It eliminates the discrepancy between the relative scoring profiles of the disparate challenges, while at the same time ranking you accurately in the cases where you both happened to enter the same challenge.

Hmm, looks like I'll be bringing sandwiches and bottled water at the weekend then!
Would it be right to average percentiles? (rushes off to check as he thinks he will be winning that as well

Some of them are OK but not good enough to beat Ecce :o( He's leagues ahead of me!
Part 1 (and 75% of the 'bet') Enter 1 challenge a week for the next 12 weeks. Winner is the person with most victories .
Current score for Part 1 is:
06/09/2006 Ecce Signum 5 Talj 2
:o(

Far from it T, 5:2 sounds like I'll most likely win but, I was very worried about a couple of weeks and things could have been very different.
What will I get out of this 3 month head to head? well, apart from oodles of dosh, the personal gratification from entering at least one image in 12 weeks without a break and (more importantly) the satisfaction that you T will have grown from a decent fotog that lacks a little confidence into a more confident photographer that actually shows her work to her peers and has gained the confidence to critique other peoples work openly (rather than via skype to close friends).
I've helped create a monster that has unleashed itself on this undeserving forum, my apologies to you all!
*edited to say* I'll make thing look a little more decent for you and let you win this week (and no, before people ask I don't know that T is currently beating me by 0.5)

All jokes aside this head to head has been a good thing for me, 'forcing' me to enter challenges here at DPC and gain some well needed confidence.
OK, I could do without having to stump up 'oodles of cash' for the privilege and losing by 0.03 is a bit gutting but these are only tiny things, I'll get over them and in the next head to head we have I'll wipe the floor with you Andi :o)
Thanks for all your encouragement :o)
