Another way to do multiple exposures is to keep the shutter open and use the "test" button on your flash (or flashlight, etc). and some flashes have a multiple flash mode.
But the D200 can take an image in one room, then (I think) you can go somewhere else and take another picture. This is difficult to do with the black card over the lens trick.
But the bigger issue is that camera bodies are getting more and more capable, and looking like PCs. It may be that some cameras will build in an automatic HDR feature, and possibly other things we now do in postprocessing. Tethered shooting allows the PC to control some camera features now.
Each generation of digital cameras seems to be more capable, and more of a stand alone unit that doesn't need a PC (eg canon's print features).
So the in-camera rule may need to be changed, but what in-camera features would casue that change?
