I'm in need of a java compiler that is free...I'm thinking most are, but I've only managed to find some ancient ones...
Anyone have a link to one that's a bit newer and maybe graphical or whatever? Thanks.
I ask here because we've literally got thousands of people coming here from all different walks of life...so I know someone who comes here frequently knows where one is.

The Sun website would be the place to get the most recent version of Java.

I saw that...I was under the impression that wasn't a compiler, but the actual thing that allows people's machines to run java.
I apologize...I'm confused a little bit here. I programmed C++ since highschool and VB for a little while...so I'm under the impression that I need some piece of software (like in C++ we use a compiler to compile the code, etc).
I have a REALLY old book that I'm going to just pick up the basics with until I can afford a new book but I'm trying to get a compiler basically before I tackle the first chapter.
Thanks
EDIT: OK... I see it now on that page...although I swear I was just there a few minutes ago and didn't see anything.

I believe you can also get the enterprise version of Java Studio (may be called Sun Studio) from the Sun site, which would have everything you need.

direct quote from one of the entries on that page:
JDK 5.0 Update 8
The Java SE Development Kit (JDK) includes:
* the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
* command-line development tools, such as compilers and debuggers, that are necessary or useful for developing applets and applications
The JRE is what you need to run java apps, the JDK or SDK are the development kits.

Don't ignore Eclipse. It's a great development "environment". Very powerful with debugging, syntax completion, etc.

But it's so .... "unlike IBM" ... not only being free, but useful too! ;-)

ok well attempt one failed...something about not having JDK...although I tried to download JDK and it said I already had it installed. So I'm downloading the whole 158MB thing now lol...
We'll see how this goes in about another 5 mins.
For Eclipse, I'm assuming I'll need to have this installed first anyway...whatever this thing is coming with. I shoulda payed more attention to this book I was looking at today in the book store lol.
Check these out...

This is pretty sweet looking. I'm gonna have to find a nice website or get a book though no doubt about that.

wow this thing takes longer to install than it does to download...450MB free hd space needed...this program is huge. And here I thought JAVA was just some little applet things on webpages.
I actually took JAVA programming in college like 6 years ago...and passed it before I switched to automotive technology. And now that I'm going back for CIT, apparently I'm supposed to still know JAVA even though so much has changed. So I figure I better get myself up to speed.

Java isn't just used for applets (which can be quite small). Java applications can be very large and complex. |

The installer for an application I work on is now 65M in size. Though I think a real test of the size of the application might be to either sum up the sizes of all of the .java or .class files... Definitely a big application though and currently available in (I believe) 16 different languages!

uhm...yeah...I followed along with this sample project and I must say I'm lost. Although I kind of like the looks of the IDE...
I swear 6 years ago you typed your stuff in notepad and clicked Start, Run and typed javac -yourfilename here and that was it...I dunno, I don't remember much from 6 years ago.
Are there any books dealing solely with NetBeans or solely with Eclipse? And that would start me from the ground up?
BTW...I really do appreciate your guys' time.
