This irritates me. I am not one to complain about scores or comments or results. But in the last challenge and in a current challenge 2 different people have just stated a number in the comment field. This annoys me! I don't really care what you vote on my picture, I don't want to know. I would prefer no comment over a simple number. The number means nothing to me. If you give me a 5 it could mean you hate my pic or you like it, how am I supposed to know what type of voter you are? Please don't waste your time or mine by simply putting down a number as your comment. Thanks!

I was probably the culprit.

If, after the voting, you would like to discuss your photo and my vote...that would be great! We both might learn something.

Karen,

It relates to something being discussed at length in this thread. You might want to check it out, there's a method to Hokie's (and someone else's?) madness.

Yes, you were, at least in my case, and I feel like Karen. I understand, that you want the votes to be public, but it would be helpful, if you told us WHY you voted so - a few words would be enough. As i can't PM every voter after each challenge, i have to assume that you just click a random number and don't have any arguments for the specific vote.

I got your number comment as well, but frankly I could care less. It was good to see it because my score is so dismal so thanks!

So..you cannot pm every vote but I can write a comment on every entry? That doesn't seem equitable.

See..you care enough about my vote to ask about it. I won't talk about your photo during the vote BUT I will be happy to talk photography and your photo after the vote.

You see...I have turned the commenting around. I will comment to people who want one on one and care enough to have 2 way discussions. My time is valuable as well and I don't want to make comments on only a select few..many of those I may never hear from back and forth.

I am selfish in a way. My comment time is valuable. I want something back for my time and I think I deserve it as much as you do :-) Fair enough?

I wouldn't care if the vote wasn't so unexpected from someone who probably knows enough of photography to separate crap from cream (not saying, my entry belongs to cream, but definitely not to crap).

And, if your time is so valuable, save the time for typing in the numbers.

Well, now you know my vote and ..when the voting is over..we can talk about it. Maybe I missed something. In that case I will be a better photographer for it. Or maybe you missed something. Who knows? But we can at least talk about it and grow the discussion in a two way manner.

looking forward to that discussion (when I'm back from vacation), I'm here to learn.

Why do you ignore them? I am willing to talk about your photo. If you knew my life and the time I have and the things I do you would apreciate the offer. I am willing to have a two-way discussion to further your photography and mine. That is time I could be using to edit for my work, have fun with my family or even do my own photography.

I encourage you not to ignore the number comments if you really want two way discussions where both you and I get something for the time offered. :-)

How about clipboarding the following and pasting it in every entry:

"I prefer to leave comments for those who really want them. If you want to discuss your photo with me after the voting, feel free to PM me. I gave your image a ___"

Then paste, add the number, and move on...

I'd only want to add; there may be a potential downside to all this "comment via PM" stuff ΓΆ€” there's no public record of it that can educate others who care to look, some time in the future...

o yeah hokie, thanks for 4 :-|

Per Bear's comment, and given hokie's offer, maybe the photo owner can PM hokie and ask for a more detailed comment, which hokie can leave on the photo, in the public domain. THEN the owner can, also in the photo's comment section, reply. It becomes a learning experience for all at that point.

Hokie, feel free to leave me numbers - I don't mind a bit. I also understand your reluctance to comment during a challenge when you never really know if those comments are even read. Still, I can't help myself sometimes - I just HAVE to comment on some. And sadly I don't get back to many after challenges are over to add my thoughts.

Seems like the SC just decided this debate (albeit it by posting in another thread). No more number only comments.

That is a pretty good idea Bear!!!

I will try to incorporate that into my next challenge I vote on :-)

gooc....I am sorry for the 4 :-( I will be happy to talk to you about it after the challenge. Trust me, I don't liek 4's either...look at my scores over the last couple months!

But..I gave out 3-9's, 5-8's, 11-7's 25-6's...so I am not trolling! (but it may not seem that way to a lot of other people...:-/ )

Why do you ignore them? ...

Because it doesn't tell me anything. Well maybe something I guess, something like this:

Score Tells me...
1 You really didn't like it, were possibly even offended by it.
5 Ho-hum. Thanks for entering...moving along now.
10 Wow! Fantastic capture for this challenge...

The comments that mean the most to me during a challenge are the sporadic ones, where I moved someone to comment in real words. I touched a nerve, positive or negative.

If I want to "talk" about my image after the challenge I'll post to the forums for feedback. Usually this isn't necessary for challenge images because the score breakdown and the handful of comments will tell me whether it was a hit or miss with the voters.

To chase someone down, via PM, after the challenge for feedback is a step I rarely take.

That's why I ignore just a number showing up in the "comments" field.

Might want to check with the SC for thier thoughts on this -- we had a bit of an uproar recently over 'cut & paste' comments.

---

In general though, I have to agree witht the above -- I would ignore number comments.

Different people have different voting schemes, so the number is only of specific value to you for whatever reason you gave it and as a part of the collection of votes to create an average. Individually the number means nothing to me.

Creating an image is form of communication -- if done well, the recipient will want to respond; if not done well, they won't. PMing someone to get a comment from them is far to close to chasing someone down and begging them to notice me for me to ever do it.

Is this true?

I am happy to get any comment during a challenge, even if it's just a score.

I was quoted out of context. I could care less that you only left me a number because my score is so dismal that just seeing '6' was uplifting.

Well, you have sent a very nice "WELCOME" to a new visitor/member. Maybe they don't read the forums.

Well if they don't read the forums they don't know anything about this, do they.
08/31/2006 09:29:10 PM · #24
But, what if they do read the forums? Looking back thru your recieved comments one must go back thru some 325, more or less, comments before you see a lone number left for you. That was sometime back in April. It has been a really bad problem for you hasn't it?
Your rant gets a 1 from me.

No, it was in the challenge that just ended, the soft focus challenge. You should know, you just left me a number as a comment on that very photo. Thank you for your rating.
