That bums me out a little. I mean your shot for soft focus was wonderful, but for some reason when I saw your entry I thought for sure it was an intentional capture as it suits the challenge very well.

To know it was something that you just happened to shoot, then post-processed to fit... :( Takes a little air out of the balloon for me.

Hope I'm explaining my thoughts on this correctly.

I'm completely not getting the argument, but if it makes you feel better I didn't just 'happen' to shoot that. I was driving around on a foggy morning looking for picturesque scenes when I came upon a large ranch. No Tresppasing, No Visitors signs everywhere. So of course I went right in. I stopped a couple of the field hands and asked them if they would mind if I shot some of their horses. Then I stood there for an hour during which I took ten, yes ten, photos. so it was not an off the cuff shot, and I don't see how it is lessened by the fact that I did not wander around saying 'I need something glowy, I need something glowy' for a week.

Sorry, I just don't buy the line of thinking. But if it's your line of thinking, run with it. I can only imagine how frustrating Stupid, Stupid week was.

Look at my portfolio, that is clearly not the case. I processed this shot because the challenge required it as I don't own a soft focus lense. I'm not going to go drop a few hundred bucks on some piece of junk I will likely never use again since I don't do portrait work.

Good for you, but why piss on people who don't work that way.

;^) Didn't enter that one...found 'Camera Self Portrait' a bit easier to pursue.

Hey router, you don't really need to be justifying yourself. He's got his opinion and that's fine, but outside the whackjob world of DPC, people may think you were crazy to actually USE the filter...

It's a great shot and I always like hearing back stories. Mine is much less exciting involving a trip to the zoo with the kids and a birds of prey exhibition show.

When the challenge was announced, I started thinking about what subject I wanted to use and how to pursue the look to best meet the challenge. I recall, and I may be wrong, that people were talking in the threads about what to use to achieve the soft focus effect. Pantyhose, vaseline and lenses were all mentioned. To me, that was the spirit of the challenge and as Dr. Achoo stated, it's impossible to compete with softening in pp.
My question is, did you take the picture to suit the challenge or did you pick the challenge to suit the picture.

I dont particularly mind that anyone used post processing to acheive soft focus but really it never even crossed my mind. but I didnt have any filters for it either just used a piece of plexiglass and some vaseline. I didnt score too well but I dont think thats because of my technique. my photo had other problems as well. I think it comes down to the end product. If those done in pp are better well then maybe thats the best way to do it. and those who did it that way just had a better handle on what to do to produce the most visually pleasing image. its almost like being in a race to the top of a building and then getting mad that someone beat you buy using the elevator when you used the stairs. you may have worked harder to do it your way but that doesnt make it the best way.

At the risk of sounding condascending, you're a very smart person and you've laid out a great analogy... :)

My thoughts:

By the third shot where the description expressed the softness was derived from photoshopping I quit looking at any more. They're great photos. But to me that is not soft focus. Simulated sure....

Why the attitude...because, I had just gotten my camera back from the shop after months without and had only an hour or so to walk and get a picture. I composed a shot but just couldn't get it right with the focus. And did not enter.

To me it's funny that photos get 1's for DNMC all the time...but then when technical challenges designed around a particular photography technique come up there is really no point in it.

It's extremely hard to compete on a technical topic against photoshopping. On the other hand, these are the topics that truly hone "photography" techniques as opposed to "development" techniques.

*shrug*

Anyways, I was bummed!

You recall selectively. In the same thread that mentioned vasoline, nylons and lenses one of the SC's detailed how to do it in photoshop.
Whatever.

If you notice I said I may be wrong... wasn't being aggressive or insulting so if you don't mind, keep your whatevers to yourself. A friendly request... :)

Forgive me...
Understand that this thread is particularly tiresome at this point,
considering it has basically consisted of people being
kill joys over a challenge that I, amazingly, did well in.

You have your opinion, Saj has that opinion. Saj is now on the
other thread stating his opnion again. personally I think it is a
useless discussion and all should focus on the pending challenges.

Understood... not a killjoy at all... I started out by saying that all the images were very good and very worthy. I consider your image to be completely and hands down the best in challenge. What this discussion was about to me was challenge description and the ways we interpret them. You have my respect and I am done... :)
