One of the more difficult assignments for a photojournalist was on a slow news day the photo editor would send every photographer out with "Get me some weather feature!"

Usually it wasn't raining or snowing.

Since this was a daily newspaper, having a person or human element interacting with the weather would always win out over a nature type of shot.

There was a Weather challenge in April 2003. In the top 50 finishers only one (#48) had a human element to it.

The challenge description could be:

Weather and People - Capture people interacting with or affected by the weather

I like this one a lot.

A few weeks ago, it was so hot and sunny here that for the first time, I saw people walking about with parasols. Sadly, I never got a photo...next summer maybe.

The parasols would be perfect. People walking into the wind, digging a car out of the snow or mud, getting drenched in the rain, enjoying the sunshine, flooded cars, there are all sorts of possibilties. It's wide open really.

it would indeed be an interesting challenge, however, some people would have a distinct advantage here. someone living in Seattle, for example, would have infinitely more options than someone living in, say, Las Vegas. I'm not saying the person from Vegas wouldn't be able to get off a great shot, just that they would likely need to be considerably more creative.

And one of the ribbons will be beads of raindrops on an oversharpened, overlit, overdone close-up-framed face.

Edit to add: The face will probably be wearing a headscarf.

to discourage THOSE - the description should say, take a photojournalistic weather photo for submission :p

Love this idea.

I honestly would love to see the variety of entries from all different climates. I am sure someone from Iceland will win a ribbon, but that's a given in any challenge.
