I received this mail from Dreamstime today :

"Dear Tom Robbrecht,

Our agency applies a pre-established set of criteria, against which each image is checked.....blablabla...
....Unfortunately, the image you have submitted was not selected. If you can fix the reason(s) mentioned below please re-upload the file......

Reason:
Poor lighting setup, poor contrast or incorrect exposure.
"

Huh ?
Please help me gain insight into WTF is wrong with the lighting/contrast in this image ?

The only thing I see that bothers me is the halo produced around each of the lemon/limes. Looks like it got blasted with an on-camera flash along with the other lights. Thats all I see that dosen't look good. Plenty bright enough.

I think the picture is not as bad as they make out, but then again some people are very fussy when it comes to stock, they have to be as their business reputation relies on the photography you are submitting.
As for the picture, in my opinion the shadows are perhaps a little harsh? If the lighting was lower and from the 10 O'clock and 2 O'clock positions, perhaps you could have achieved the blown background, whilst retaining detail in the white of the cut lemon?

I took a stab at editing this. Basically I lighten things up a bit using Shadow/Highlights and some selective dodging. I aslso used the color balance adjustment layer to give the midtones a bit more green.

ETA: I also use USM (local contrast enhancement) selectively to give the interior of the slice fruits more pop.
