I'm voting for sillouettes and I'm seeing a lot of good attempts that failed due to levels of black not being low enough. Leaving dull but noticable detail, where detail should not be.

I'm not in this challenge, so I'm not bitching. But this is a friendly reminder to set your monitor where you can see all the boxes in this graphic.

The same goes for voters in the challenge.

very good idea, there are quite a few in this challenge that to me arent true Silouettes.

ARgh!!! I hate calibration. Just when I think mines good I see something like this and adjust it and it just makes me doubt my monitor and my editing. I guess I really should invest in a spyder or something. After adjusting to match the above bar so that the last 4 or so boxes didn't blend into eachother, I realize that my silhouette photo looks like complete crap and deserves the 4.6 score that it is currently sitting at. Poop (to put it kindly)!!! I don't want to have to deal with this. Of course, all the photos that I've edited lately I'm sure need to be reworked. Again I'll repeat, ARGH!!!!!!!!!

I don't agree. I love this photo of yours and you only just recently uploaded it:

So yes... do get your monitor calibrated, but don't lose sight of this kind of quality. :-)

they liked it. Must have given me a decent score because I was sitting at a 4.4 a few hours ago.

Thanks David! :-) Unfortunately I edited that a couple months ago. I just recently uploaded it here. :-( And while it looks good to me, some of the newer stuff is looking a little flat now. Hmmmm.....

Why can't there be some detail?

a profile portrait, filled in with a solid color ...

Edit: whith photography that is usually black unless you are a god of light :-)

Edit again: not to start a debate about sillouettes, but in this case I'd state there is detail where detail was apparently not intended to be.

whenever I try using that damn thing I make my monitor too bright. That's why my magic & mystery entry was so dark and I got killed for it. So, no thank you, calibration!

I just finished voting... and some definitely had TOO much detail... depending on the content and the overall shot, they were scored accordingly!!

I tried to leave comments for those I felt would want explanation if they knew my score...

good luck everyone!!

Oh... and I saw a lot of grainy photos... i was worried its my monitor... can someone let me know if I am seeing things??? or are some grainy?

Don't try to start a freakin' debate with me about what the hell a silluoette is... I don't give a crap. Just trying to offer some friendly advice. I'm not even in the damn challenge.

Good god all effin' mighty!!!!

I've had a couple comments that my shot is greenish, I think this maybe a monitor problem also, since I have checked my monitor several times lately.

Some are grainy, prolly low-light response of their cameras.

ah crap... thats exactly what happened to mine... got a comment saying so... thought i calibrated my monitor using the adobe thing as well :(

can anyone give me some other tips on how to calibrate without spending on one of those spyder calibration thingos? I'd really like to buy one, but currently funds are way to limited... unless somebody else in melbourne wants to go halvsies :P

Good advice to calibrate for all challenges.

I always considered silhouette to have no detail, but the challenge description says:

"Details: Silhouettes are created by backlit subjects, which causes them to appear solid and without much, if any detail. Submit your best silhouette taken this week!"

Bold is mine for emphasis. I believe that leaves the door a bit open for a bit of detail.

I see every shade in the test strip, my entry is exactally as I intended it to be and does contain SOME detail... but only where I intended detail and darkness elsewhere. I don't think the "rule" is black and white. My silly opinion, go on about your lives.
08/30/2006 10:49:52 PM · #23
I intended for mine to have a slight amount of detail

I can calibrate a monitor and I can read a challenge description.

Funny that someone can call someone out in an arrogant manner, yet get upset when they don't agree with him.

Can't we all just get a bong? Chill guys, was just an observation and a good one at that. Debate unecessary.
