Hi. Is there any major benefit to the new F717 over the F707? I've read that autofocus is faster, maybe better at lowlight, and they've switch some buttons around but it doesn't seem that much different.

Is the picture quality different? Better? Worse? Or does it use the exact same imaging technology?

Perhaps someone out there on dpchallenge has used both. Thanks.

As far as I know the 717 is a little faster in the auto focus and has less shutter lag.
Also the 717 is USB 2.0 so the image transfers from camera to PC will be faster.

Some prefer the colors out of the 707 over the 717, but i think the 717 images will print a little bit better.

For my own needs when I got the 707 the difference in the features was not enought to pay the extra $$$ for the 717.

I can say that the effectiveness of the histogram for controlling exposure cannot be overstated. With my S50 I was constantly adjusting the levels in post, but now I frequently bring up the histograms in CorelDraw and they require absolutely no adjustment.

The ability to take Memory Stick Pro is also a big factor. They only function about 20% faster than regular sticks in the F717 (from a few tests I've read) but as the Pro format is advertised to have a theoretical limit of 32 gigs, the future *may* be very bright for storage possibilities. I say 'may' because the bastards at Sony told me that I'd be able to get 2 gig sticks that fit in my S50 one day. They just neglected to tell me that they wouldn't work...

I like that I can use any flash I want...this is good when you want to borrow someone's flash, or if you have other, older flashes.

James.

Honestly right now there really isn't much of a price difference between the two.
