I think UPS and FedEx are missing out on a potentially very popular delivery option namely weekend pickups. I don't think I've ever had a package that didn't spend a weekend sitting less than five miles away from my home. I'd happily drive over and pick them up to begin with rather than have them attempt delivery and then have me call and drive over anyway. I'd get the package(s) sooner and they would save gas and manpower for packages that can actually be delivered.

Anyone else with me on this?

I personally haven't had bad experiences with this but I know a couple of people who have had HUGE problems like you describe (and with expensive and urgently needed computer hardware, too).

Having worked at UPS and knowing how they operate, I can tell you this would be very costly for them. It would in no way be cost effective.

But, from a customer point of view it is a good idea and if they had it there have been times I would have used it.

I wouldn't say it's a huge problem as I no longer expect on-time deliveries and no longer pay extra for "faster" shipping. However, I would pay a couple of extra bucks for the option. Somewhere between ground and 2nd day perhaps.

Essentially it would be like me paying extra to ensure on-time delivery. If not ensure, it would at least cut out the 2-3 day additional delay of trying to actually get the package. Hell, even an option for them to not attempt delivery would save that additional delay and I'd definitely be willing to pay a couple bucks more for that.

I've actually gone to the FedEx place a couple of times to pick up a package on the weekend. If you have the tracking number and someone there is willing to help you out, they'll give it to you there. At least, this was my experience.

Policy must vary by location. That is not the policy in place at my local FedEx office. Would rock if it were though.

I ordered something once, it got to the local UPS place on Friday...I called and asked, they wouldn't let me come pick it up, so I had to wait until monday while my box sat like 4 miles from my house for close to 72 hours.

Does UPS still have 3 day select? They just started it when I was leaving? It was 3 days or less.

I haven't seen "select" available at the online places I shop. Some offer UPS 3 Day but they claim that is delivery in 3-5 days.

Yeah, problem is they know what truck your box is on, but it's a 24-40 foot trailor stuffed with thousands of boxes. They load the boxes into the little brown trucks as they take them out of the trailor. So they really have no way to get to your box until the morning they are going to deliver it.

If your box arrives in your city after 5-6am Friday you probably won't get it until Monday.

I have in the past tracked a package and when I know it is in route to the UPS building here in town which is only 2 blocks from my house, I will call them and ask that the package be held off the truck. They then set it aside and I pick it up at the UPS customer service window between 5-6:00 PM.

My biggest problem with UPS the past few years is they don't stop for anything. They just leave your package laying on the step and yell UPS as they are running back to the truck. unless a sig is required. I have had to send back a 2 packages because they left them out in the rain. a Hard Drive which was soaked through because it sat out in the rain for nearly 2 days, I didn't see the package til then. No indication UPS was even here. Also had to send back a box full of books that also was left out on our porch on a rainy afternoon.

Remember the days when they used to ring your bell and wait for you to come to the door?
