Hey there,

I shot my first "real" shoot today. This young lady wanted me to shoot her senior portraits, so I took a stab at it. Any comments or suggestions? I know the lighting is a bit harsh in a few spots, but given the time of day we had to work in, it was fairly tough. I am hoping that some of the lighting issues can be "corrected" in PS. Any suggestions about that too?

Thanks for checking these out.

Of the four, I like the 3rd one the best. Specifically because of the lighting. #4 is okay, just a tad dull (PP could help). In #3 she is lit up and the surroundings are muted. In #1 she is dark but the background is bright. In #2 ... well ... let's just say putting half of her face in sunlight and the rest in shadow wasn't the smartest move. :-)

Of the 4, I think the 3rd and 4th are the best (although I also think they both have their own problems). As you know, the lighting in the first 2 is terrible (a hazard of trying to shoot portraits in bright sunlight). I usually try to find a shaded area (with the darker area in back of the subject) and shoot with an f/1.8 prime lens wide open. Shooting early in the morning or at dusk also seems to work well for me. The lighting of your subject in #3 and #4 is much better - however, I find the pose in #3 to be a bit awkward in perspective, and I think her left hand would be better placed on her left knee, or with her elbow and hand extening across the top of her left thigh to her knee (rather than having her fingertips protrude from under her leg). Again, the background in both #3 and #4 is too close in color to her outfit. Keep at it! :)

I like the chair one maybe if you brightened it up a bit?

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments. I agree that I blew it on the lighting on the first two. I need to train my eye to notice this stuff. In a wierd way it seems like my eye automatically ignores it. Of course the camera sees it clear as day. :|

Anyway, I appreciate the feedback. I have had some success on photo number two in PS balancing the shadows and highlights to make it more uniformely lit. I tried to use a reflector in that situation to help broaden the light, but it was a tricky angle with the sun being behind me and low.

Thanks again everyone. I'll probably keep my day job for the time being. ;)
