Dumb Laws

For one of my classes this semester, an extra credit assignment directed us to the website above. I chose Illinois (cause that's where I live!) and laughed my butt off!! Try your state and marvel at the stupidity which is part of the legal system!

An example:

In Chicago, it is forbidden to fish while sitting on a giraffe's neck.

Whew, wish we'd have known that before our Chicago GTG!

I just read the ones for Canada and although some are true, a lot are not or they are so archaic that they are not enforced any more and it will only be a matter of time before they are written off the books.

My favotes for Pennsylvania:

* "It it illegal to sleep on top of a refrigerator outdoors."
* "Any motorist driving along a country road at night must stop every mile and send up a rocket signal, wait 10 minutes for the road to be cleared of livestock, and continue."
* "You may not sing in the bathtub."
* "A person is not eligible to become Governor if he/she has participated in a duel."
* "You may not catch a fish with your hands."
* "You may not catch a fish by any body part except the mouth."
* "Dynamite is not to be used to catch fish."

Looking at California's "Dumb Laws" I think the majority of them aren't dumb.

-----Citizens may not greet each other by "putting one's thumb to the nose and wiggling the fingers".
-----The penalty for jumping off a building is death.
-----A person may not walk around on Sundays with an ice cream cone in his/her pocket.
-----While riding in an elevator, one must talk to no one, and fold his hands while looking toward the door.
-----Slippers are not to be worn after 10:00 P.

Can't believe how many laws I've broken when I was in New York.

Although this: 'All married women must get their husband's permission if they wish to have a job, they must live wherever the husband wishes to reside, and they must forfeit all jointly held assets upon divorce from her husband.' was corrected 12 years ago in Turkey.

In New Orleans we should have a law that says:

If you have a car and there is an evacuation order, you should leave town. If you don't leave town, and the hurricane hits, you should not be able to voice the opinion that you "nearly died because of the Corps of Engineers and President Bush are saps!"

If I see one more documentary about Katrina and I hear how "we couldn't get out", I think I'm going to scream.

There are THOUSANDS of flooded out cars at the local dump sites that were available for families to use to evacuate. I also hear that "we didn't have anywhere to go". Nearly 1 million did evacuate and not A SINGLE PERSON starved to death in Baton Rouge, Houston, San Antonio, Atlanta...etc...

...now with this new storm approaching, I'm sure we'll hear the same stuff....BUSH this, Bush that, Bush didn't, Bush should have.....

ARHGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Poorly written but dog leash laws are common and not really dumb. I didn't notice the first time I looked there are many pages. Some of the ones on the other pages better qualify as dumb.

Hahahahaha! I love the penalty for jumping off a building! It reminds me of another Chicago law:
It's prohibited to eat in a building that is on fire.

Seriously?!?! Who would keep eating their dinner in the middle of the restaurant burning down?

True. And not to waylay the tragedy of all of the loss there....but I've been really surprised that people weren't more upset with their local and state governments who did almost less than nothing to prepare people for the storms and help them evacuate.
