I use Adobe PhotoDeluxe (came with my scanner) to edit photos. It has a thing, a filter, I guess, to remove Moire. I did it to my Triptych shot (all editing allowed) and I really like what it did. What is Moire, and is this legal? |

Can we use text on the Triptych challenge?

The triptych challenge has no editing restrictions. You can do whatever you want. It says requests for dq due to editing will be ignored. You can add text. You can draw mustaches on people. You can superimpose a smile face onto your dog. The voters might not like it, but you cannot be disqualified for any editing practices.
As for moire, it should be fine for the triptych shot, but I don't know if it would be a generally acceptable modification since I have no clue what moire is.

Moire is an interference pattern usually caused by scanning printed materials which have already been "screened" into halftone dots. When two screen images overlap they can develop an interference pattern which can range from unnoticable to huge gray blobs. The pattern in this case is created by interference between the images dots and the scanner or camera's sensor array.
An anti-moire or "descreen" filter usually slightly blurs the original dots and then re-sharpens the image to (try to) compensate. It should generally be considered a "workaround" technique, and is probably NOT a DPC-legal filter for regular challenges. You can somewhat duplicate the effect by carefully applying a Guassian Blur and then re-sharpening.
Remember, in regular challenges you can't use a scanned image anyway.
If anyone's interested, I'll try and post some examples of accidental and intentional moire. |
