ok.. i'm trying to identify an old lens i have for my minolta maxxum 7000. it says PROSPEC MC Auto-Focus Zoom 1:3.5~5.6 f=28~200mm Licenced by Minolta. is this a good lens? who makes it? PROSPEC? who are they? is it worth buying a digital camera like the 5D, 7D or the new SONY Alpha to use these lenses? i'm interested in the alpha, but are hesitant if the lenses i have (2 more) won't work well and are not worth adapting to the digital world?

the other two lenses are a tamron 80-210mm CF Tele Macro and a simple 35-70mm zoom AF for maxxum.

any thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Yes, the lenses should work with the 7D 5D or A100. The A-100 continues to support the Maxxum lens mount.

The 35-70mm zoom is the only lens you have that I have any experience with. It's pretty much a kit lens, but it performed rather well.

Disclaimer: Right up front I'll tell you I have no experince with any of these specific lenses, so take what I say only as general information.

I don't know the Prospec brand, it seems like a 3rd party lens manufactured for the Minolta mount. The fact that it's a 28-200 zoom, rather slow, and rather old does not bode well for optical quality. Older zooms in general are not as good as modern designs, and the wide zoom range implies nast compromises in design.
The others may be decent optically; perhaps someone with more knowledge of the Minolta system can comment. I assume these are not f/2.8 zooms either, but f/3.x to 4.x or 5.x?
If the 80-210 and the 35-70 turn out to be good lenses, then perhaps a 5D or 7D body, which are pretty reasonably priced, could be a good purchase, giving you a very usable system for the cost of a body. If they are mediocre to average quality, forget using them on a modern digital body, you won't be satisfied with the results.

thanx, i was hoping that these lenses would be the next step for me in the digital world, but i'm still unsure. i wish i could test differnt cameras to see wich would be the best for the money. i have had mixed results using my 35mm with these lenses, but i'm far from good when it comes to standard 35mm. i figured my mistakes could be fixed with a digital camera, but if the quality is still not there then what is the point right? once again i wish i could test these before i buy. hmmmm
