I don't really have a studio to shoot studio pics but I'd like to be able to shoot some food pictures and products at home on the table perhaps. I have tried a few shoots but it seems the lighting is not adequate. Is there anything you guys can recommend I could purchase at Home Depot maybe? I want to get at least decent shots, so far they are just so so.
Thanks |

get some work lights.. they are bright and work nicely, but i usually use my flash and a diffuser, IMO invest in a flash then you wont have to worry about moving around lights, and harsh reflections... and the laws oflighting and all that stuff ;)

edit: if you do get the work lights make sure you get something big and that wont catch on fire to diffuse it.. trust me

If you're shooting food and products (smaller items), I recommend building your own lightbox. There are great instructions at //www.jyoseph.com/extras/archives/2006/02/diy_lightbox.php and the resulting lightbox works great. I've used it on multiple occasions now and was cheap and easy to make. :D |

first you have to know all your items, i mean what light sources you have. reflectors flashes, then background., then you need to play with all of them, the good thing is that yuo dont need a big space for this kind of work.
if you have a hand flash depend wich one you can always buy a little cord to starting making more versatil light for example 40degrees angles light or so. little mirrors can be used to for spot light |

OK, I forgot to mention that I have 2 Canon 550EXs and I also got this as a gift
//www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1485316&CatId=131
This works OK for small objects but I can't use that for food shots.
So maybe I should get work lights. I've noticed that I think I need a good light source from above. I will post some pics of my food shots that I am getting now and maybe you guys can tell me what I need to do to improve.

I built something similar myself, started with 4 lights using "reveal" 100 watt bulbs but they didnt give me the light I wanted so I went with 200 watt bulbs but my box is rather large at about 40" wide.

I do want something larger so I can fit food on a large plate.
Do you get any specific bulbs or just any 200 watt bulb? |

I combined a couple different DIY ideas when I made mine. Mine is actually comprosed of 1/2" PVC frame. I then got 40" x 36" foam core and used 2 for the sides. I have them just taped in. I combined 2 peices of the foam core for the top since its a bit wider than 40" and I just set it on the top of the frame and depending on the look im going for I will use tag board or hang a roll of paper on one of the PVC cross tubes.
For the bulbs, there wasnt a lot of choices where I checked for 200watt bulbs. The Reveals have kind of a blue cast to them but the 200 watters I got were labeled as "shop lights" so the bulbs where just clear glass. |

How about a home made light tent. IMHO it is more versitile than a light box and you can scale it to any size you want.
