Depends were your upgrading from really - It would be a bit of a leap for me with my 300D. Only thing that bothers me is the size, if its not much bigger than the 350D thats a bit dissapointing as I found the 350D a bit on the small side for me.

Still there is always something coming out!

I do agree with whomever said it above that I have a slight worry about the battery life. Having your shutter info on the screen which may be on all the time (except when it's up to your face) may seriously drain the battery. I'm guessing they did it this way to save money on the LCD, but at the tradeoff of lower battery life.

Haha--actually the 24-70 is going up on Ebay. I can't afford to have the 24-105 and the 24-70.

In other words, current Rebel XT owners (like myself) probably won't upgrade to this one (I won't). But for those looking to get a DSLR for the first time, this will be a no-brainer. I think this is going to take a LOT of thunder out of Nikon and Sony's latest offerings. Great price, for what you get. I talked to a Canon rep who said February will be the month to hear about the newest updates for the 5D. THAT is what I'm waiting for. As for the lenses, they sound great but I'm set for lenses for now. Just my $.02

I wish they'd just leave that 5D alone so the price will come down. I think if they keep upgrading it, the price will remain in the ball park that it is. I won't buy another body unless it's the 5D. I want that sucker badddd.

I saw the new camera on Canon's web site, but couldn't find the new 50mm 1.2L

It's listed under "Telephoto" for some reason.

I think it's a no-brainer the other way; let's see:

Nikon D80 over the 400D:
- better viewfinder
- second command dial
- built-in sophisticated wireless iTTL flash commander
- spot metering
- ISO boost up to 3200
- SD media (appealing for most first-time SLR buyers, subtract media cost from the price)
- top LCD panel display (saves battery and improves usability)
- a number of not-so-significant bells and whistles (in-camera multiple exposures, D-lighting)
- larger, more convenient body (subjective)

Canon 400D over D80:
- lower price
- antidust feature
- *maybe* better high ISO noise performance with the new sensor
- smaller, lighter body (subjective)
- what did I miss?

Not anytime soon. 17mm on a Rebel XT is 27.2mm (17 x 1.6). When I get a 5D (or whatever the latest / greatest in that line is about a year from now) the full frame sensor will make my 24-105 more in line with a 17-40 in the wide angle department. But then again, I never say never when it comes to new gear! :o)

I see little use for this lens. In the pre-autofocus days, fast lenses were great for ease of focus in low light-low contrast settings, but you rarely if ever shot at 1.2. for a full frame facial portrait, you focus on the nose and the eyes will be soft.

The old Canon range finder had a 50mm f0.95. Talk about shallow DOF!

I wish they would make a 50 1.4L, lower price but sealed and built to the L standards.

Is there an official release date for this yet? I looked over the literature and can't seem to find one. I'm glad this announced when it did-- I was almost ready to replace my ailing 300D with the Sony A100. (I know, I've got no loyalty at all.) The only thing holding me back what that I didn't want to have to buy accessories for the different system. The 400D will let me keep my Canon schwag and give me a little bit of an upgrade for not a terrible amount of cash.

Shouldn't that be the D50 v 400D, or the D80 v 30D?

The D80 has the edge on the 30D at the moment (in most reviews) by a hair's breadth. However, the 400D, at its price point, surely sets a new standard? Well - subject to the picture quality remaining at 350D + quality!

Mid September is what I've heard, so give it a month and you can get it. canon is good about this.

In this morning's newspaper, it says it will be released (here in Japan, at any rate) on 8th September. Of course, here it's known as the EOS Kiss Digital X.

ETA: I just checked the Reauters link - the paper has a picture of the same two models holding the camera.
