Geez...I am glad you bumped. I wouldn't have known these questions were asked.

Basically...I did heaps of test shots with and without the men in the shot. I needed to make sure the lighting was correct for both the smoke and the person in the smoke. Hence the cars were moved around until that was right. I tried both flash and no flash...but realised that flash made it very unnatural. That is why I changed the camera to the other side of the fire. The position of the cars and smoke was more beneficial.

Once I had it how I wanted I then put Damion onto the remote so my settings and lens couldn't be changed. I get angry when my camera gets mucked around with. He had a beer in one hand and the remote in the other. For a while I left it on Autofocus as the camera was picking up good focus with me in the smoke. But at one stage Damion called out that the camera wouldn't let him press the button on the remote...so I went over and set it to Manual focus and focused on the fire.
