I have an idea that I would like to get some input on. Maybe some of you have even done this and could offer some tips.

I was thinking of approaching youth sports leagues (Baseball mainly, for now) and offer to take action shots during games. My hope, of course, would be to sell the prints to parents, making some money for myself and giving the league their pre-arranged percentage of the money as well. I think this would be a great way for the league to make money and it wouldn't cost them anything at all.
All the league needs to do is allow me access to take the photos and allow me to set up a table to show the parents the proofs and take orders for prints. Now for the questions....

1. Has anyone done this?
2. Is it worth trying?
3. Where to get prints made? Is Sams ok?
4. Pricing

Any input, psitive or negative would be very much appreciated.
P.S. Sorry for the spelling errors

I know a photographer near me who does that. He shoots little league games. Comes back next practice and sells 4X6s to the parents of the little darlings. Not sure where/how he prints, but I know he makes a tidy sum doing it.

I know someone here has mentioned doing this before, but I forget who it was. It will definitely be worth trying it out and seeing what you can make of it.

Along the lines of giving the league a percentage of your income: I'm pretty sure the average Little League will not care whether they get a cut of the money you make. But you probably should talk to someone about setting up a table or booth at the games.

Good luck.

Or if not a percentage of money, maybe just a one-time "table set-up" fee or something like that?

I have to admit i didn't acually think of this on my own. A good friend of mine has two kids in little league and a photographer did this at thier all-star games. He was selling indevidual prints but where he made a killing was offering a collage of three differant poses of the child for $20.00. It had thier name, team and position artistacly done in photoshop I assume. He said parents were lined up practicly throwing money at the guy.

I have done this on a couple of different levels. In one instance, I took photos for a T-Ball team my daughter was on, and a Baseball team my son was playing on. Before the seasons started I informed the parents I would be making my photographs available for them to purchase. Granted, I didnt charge an arm and a leg as I wanted to get as many parents as possible to purchase my work in the hopes of creating a name for myself locally. I would post smaller versions of the photos on a WebSite and I invited them to view. They would then tell me the size they wanted and I would sell them according to what they wanted.

I have also been asked to do exclusive photos of children during the games. Gave them "X" number of photos on a CD for "X" number of dollars. All in all I have sold 107 photos during the past T-Ball, Baseball season.

I have now begun to prep for Pop Warner Football and Soccer season.

During baseball season, my 6yo nephew was on the All-Star team. I went to a couple of his games to take pictures of him. I ended up with pics of all the kids batting, and some good candids. I then made a collage of the pictures showing all the kids and it said something like "Canton All-Stars, Red Team, 2006". I also made one of just images of my nephew. At the last game, I took my nephew his pictures. My brother and SIL showed them around and everyone on the team bought one. Because I was selling "unsolicitated," I only charged $5.00 for an 8x10 collage and $7.50 framed (cheapy frame). Everyone on the team bought at least one. :)

Now that football season has started, I am doing something similar with my little sister's business. She videotapes each of the football games. I take shots during the game. Then, she makes a slideshow of sorts with her video and my pictures. The parents can order two teams per dvd, and they can get one for each game. I am making an album of pictures and will allow the parents to order if they wish. Also, for each of my nephew's and two of my students on the team, I am doing an 8x10 "collage" of them playing and parents can order those as well. Haven't decided my pricing exactly yet.

A guy at church came in tonight showing off an 8x10 someone had taken of his son making a tackle. It was a set up similar to what we are discussing. The photog was charging $10 for an 8x10, and though the picture was a good capture, the print quality was horrendous. Atrocious. Awful. Should be illegal, even. BUT, the dad was proud as punch. Sooooooooo, since my nephews' teams play his sons' teams this next Sunday, he asked if I would take pictures of his sons. Two more collages, coming up. :)

edited to add -- this was my nephew's. It looked really good printed at 8x10 or bigger. I think the next ones I do will have bigger pictures . ..

If your good in post processing sell pics of the kids on Baseball/Football cards. You can make a killing. There not really tough to do.
