canon has an announcement coming on the 24th (The X), and it has some threads going elsewhere with lots of speculation, and it got me thinking.

IMO Canon needs a new low end dSLR and to 'support' my thinking i went to the only data i have, the list of owners here at DPC. I expected canon to be #1, but not by such a wide margin, and the lower priced digital SLRs have a very weak showing...

So anyone have any idea on what the market share really is between teh companies?

The numbers here:
All Oly dLSRs: 318
All KM/Minolta: 248
All Sony dSLRs: 1
All Pentax dSLRs: 322
All Nikon dSLRs: 6162
All Canon dSLRs: 12,845

So does that imply canon has twice the sales of Nikon?

I feel SO much in the minority here! ;^)

I think KM/Minolta & SONY should be combined to Minolta/SONY.

Thus giving them 249.

As for Canon, I don't think they need a new budget camera. Unless they were to make a variant of the 5D. Perhaps a 7D, that is a slightly feature reduced and cheaper.

What I really am waiting for before I'd consider another Canon body is a ultrasonic dust removal system. IMHO, this is much needed. Complaints have been made that the Olympus system slows the start-up time. SONY does it when you turn off the unit. I think this is a mixed compromise.

IMHO...they should implement it as follows: Ultrasonic cleaning can be set to operate on start-up or on turn-off, and can also be run at command from the menu.

I had really hoped the 1Ds MK II would have this feature. But it didn't so maybe this new MKIII/X will have it. *finger's crossed*

It's called the 30D. Unless you want something like a 300D with a full frame sensor, but that's not gonna happen. The cost of the sensor precludes that as the only diff between the 30D and 5D IS the sensor and $1500 (I doubt all the price diff is the sensor cost though)

The 5D has been rebated of late, so I suspect a replacement or update.
Not sure what the X is - a low end or a MF?

Considering the age of the Rebel XT, the release of the Nikon D80, and the Sony A100, and Canon's own traditional replacement cycles.......

I don't really thint there's really much to speculate about which camera is being replaced here.

The low-end is changing to 10mp by market demand. You're not getting 5fps or the more advance features and Magnesium body of the 30D though.

But with both Nikon and Sony releasing pretty nifty cameras in this range, Canon would have to be daft to ignore them. The only real reason so many people who don't know better buy Canon XT's is because of the 8mp over 6mp. Period. n00bs don't know what noise or ISO is. People who know better will understand the benefits of the 30d still.
