Just more for fun than any idea I could actually afford it right now, I've been watching Ebay auctions to replace the 717 I sold to finance the purchase of my DSLR. I really liked that camera for certain types of photography and it gives me a great back up that I'm familiar with.

I've been studying the prices now for quite some time. Won an auction tonight for the camera in excellent condition, with charger, battery, memory stick and camera bag (all shown in nice clear photos, and w/seller excellent feedback rating) for a total of $221.08 including shipping!

Yay! *happy dance*

Sony DSC-F717

One of the main reasons I got this is because I have been looking for something with a nice short minimum focusing range for macros. As I priced lenses, I starting thinking that for me perhaps the best option was to kill two birds with one stone. I remembered liking the macros from the 717 and all along I've said I planned to replace the one I sold and use it for backup.

Eventually, I'll get all the fancy lenses for the Canon, but now I'm really happy with the versatility I'll have with both of these cameras. I missed having more of a point and shoot option in some environments.

I'm so surprised that my bid was the high price. Happy, but surprised!

It's not Steve Davidson's lost camera is it? Great cam for IR photography.

Hey, maybe it's the one that got stole from Steve. Wouldn't that be the craps after all he's been through lately?

if the seller is from the Mesa area better check the serial number when you receive it. could be Steves camera.

It's Kansas, but what is his serial number? The seller shows a picture with the number.

Dang. No one else shares in my excitement? :(

Okay...so it's a Monday. Here it is absolutely gorgeous this morning. Gallons of sunshine, low humidity, and

I'M GETTING A NEW CAMERA! :)

That's like a birth announcement around here, isn't it???? LOL

HERE"S the auction that I won.

The only one's I've seen let go for less than that have some issues or missing stuff. This has everything I need and appears to be exc. condition. And the seller has excellent feedback and communication.

Okay, I'll quit jumping up and down now. It's just that only other camera people understand the "high" of knowing a new addition is on the way :) And I truly have missed my little Sony. I will now have the best of both worlds.

That sure would be interesting if it were Steve's camera.

And assuming that it's not...CONGRATULATIONS! It seems like a great price and it should serve you well.

I basically have the same camera (F707) as my backup camera. It served me well for years and now my son is using it. He will be entering the Rope Challenge with a shot he took on Saturday.

A recent photo mag had an article about P & S cameras and mentioned that one of their strengths over DSLRs is their ability to reach the equivalent aperture of f/64 for outstanding DOF in macro shots. It was a recent (within the last two months) issue. I'll see if I can find it.

That would be an interesting article to read. The Sony did very nice macros. I also just missed having a little "less" camera for some situations, plus the swivel body/lens was a nice feature for taking people shots. I had my 717 for about 2 1/2 years and the vast majority of photos taken in my portfolio were with that camera.

The thing that seems to make the rest of the camera work so well is the Carl Zeiss lens. It takes great pictures.

i know how much youloved that sony you had and how much it bothered you to sell it for the 10D I'm VERY happy that you got another one :D

After looking at that camera I cant imagine wanting it as a second camera. That thing looks huge and very unbalanced. I'd much rather take along a DSLR then that. Just looks bulky enough to me that I'd rather take my regular gear with me. But if you loved it you already know what your getting so good luck with it.

Robert,

Cool! What kind of laptop did you get? Saving for it yourself at 16 is a great thing. I'm sure you'll really appreciate the hard work that went into buying it. Congratulations.

Matt,
If you've never seen or handled a 717 in person, I think you'd be surprised! It was much smaller than I thought it would be and the design is actually quite nice to hold / use. I can slip it into my purse, or leave it conveniently in my car - neither of which I'd want to do with my DSLR.

Probably why I'm so pleased with the purchase...everyone has to figure out what works best for them, and I believe this closes a big gap in the kind of photography I generally like to do.

It's HERE! Yay...:)

In excellent shape, just as described. I don't know why it went so cheaply. I still think I got a very good deal.

Now I have a lot more versatility and I think I'll probably end up taking more photos again.

I'm excited to have both set-ups now.

Congrats Judy! I used to have a 707 until it died at 20,000 frames (out of warranty). Went to DSLR and haven't looked back. Almost wish I still had that format of camera, they are awesome, but can't afford a replacement for it (707).

Because I had previously owned one of these cameras and loved the photo quality. The swivel lens is wonderful for candids and awkward angles. I was very pleased with the battery life. The only reason I upgraded to a DSLR was for more flexibility with the aperture and speed.

I have had 16x20's made from 717 files and they are beautiful. This is the camera I knew I would be happy with. :)
