The suckers are $90 from Alien Bees. Is it an essential item or is there a way to work without one?

The biggest problem I am having is dark hair blending into the black backgrounds too much. I was thinking a light overhead my subjects would help solve the problem.

You can definitely use a light to help separate hair from the background but it need not be on a boom to accomplish this effect. The boom only positions the light. You could also mount a light close to the backdrop, put a comb (say 20 degree or so) into it, use a snoot or even work with barndoors and flags/gobos. The point being, you would want to direct the light into the hair to help put some highlight & definition into the hair to help create separation from the background.

Thank you. I am going to give this a try. I have several of the
'honeycomb' filters from AB's.

I've got three AlienBees boom arms. They make positioning lights, softboxes, and other objects much easier. They make your light stands much more versatile.

The counter weights are heavy and can be a pain, but they're a necessary evil.

I̢۪ve got a couple Bogen/Manfrotto heavy-duty flex arms with SuperClamps that fit on the ends of the boom arms. They come in real handy at times too.
