This is a picture of the beautiful chesterfied at Mountain Lake, Va. Other than the powerline in the picture what is your opinion of the picture. Keep in mind that I only have a 3megapixel camera. I also like trying to get a good exposure with the camera and not doctor it with photoshop or the likes. I am going to start playing with photoshop but I still like trying to get my settings right on the camera.

exposure is not bad
but the lighting is flat
biggest probelm with the pic is that your horizonal "isn't"
try lining up withthe landing on the staircase o it is straight in the viewfinder
or get the corners of the cabin going straight up and down ..

Ralph covered what would help the image well enough.
I just wanted to say to not be too down on your camera. 3MP is more than enough until you start wanting to print large (or crop a lot). Also, I find the more I learn about photoshop (the digital equivalent to a darkroom) and preparing the image myself, the more I concentrate on getting the exposure 'right' in the camera. Of course, what I consider the 'right' exposure has changed since I stopped having the camera do the preparing for me.

| The shot doesn't have any real impact. A high contrast B&W version might work. |

If this is a shot you could easily reshoot, I would go back when the sun was casting against the cabin at an angle. This would solve the flat issues and bring out some interesting details in the wood.

I know you said you didn't want to doctor it in photoshop... but still, see what you think.
Mostly just increasing contrast and a bit of saturation followed by some dodge & burn to make the lighting a little less flat. |

Thanks for all of the replies, I appreciate the info. Dwterry that looks very nice maybe I do need to use photediting software. I actually just downloaded paintshop pro to see how I like it.

Most of us post images into our DPC portfolio and then click the thumbnail link above the message entry (2nd icon from the right).
You can often hot-link to an external image by using the 3rd icon (hover over it, it says Insert Image). I tried it with your photo and it seems that the epson.com website does not allow hot linking. Here is what the code would look like. I inserted a space after each opening "[" so you could read the code:

Looks like a cool subject, but composition isn't the greatest. If you can try different angles. The main thing you see is the stairs, but it doesn't lead the eye to anything.
