It looks like you clicked the shutter and got lucky...
Optimally, you want to point the camera where you was to take the picture, set it to a 15 or 30 second exposure for the scene as it stands...take the picture and you're bound to catch a lightning strike or two or three in a good storm...
But as your photo stands, it just looks too underexposed in the surrounding areas to me.

It's an 8 second exposure (the most my camera will do). I caught a couple others, but this was the most dramatic, but also the darkest.

Crop it to look like a panaromic and you have something. Good shot.

I did that at first, but someone told me that they thought it looks better like this. I should have stuck with my gut instinct.
