How about a portrait challenge that was specifically for faces only as opposed to "upper body" or "full body."
For example:
Topic: Face
Description: Create an image that contains only a persons face, hair and/or neck. Clothing and jewellery are also acceptable.
This would mean the images would need to be taken with a very tight crop. It would create many interesting challenges for the photographers and the subjects.
Edit: I know I put this in the wrong section. I'll ask for it to be moved :)

I'm sorry but I just had to bump this suggestion. I'd find it completely enjoyable to participate, but more importanly vote on a challenge like this. And after the last few challenge topics, it would be quite refreshing, to me anyways. Surely there are others. :)

Out of curiosity, are you referring to what's commonly called a "headshot", which typically is face, neck, sometimes a little shoulders, or are you actually looking for shots that crop in so tight we are seeing ONLY face, basically?

"Headshot" is "easier", that's for sure, and it's a lot more common. "Face", if it's limited to just that, faces, NOT full headshots, is to me a more interesting challenge...

I agree, but I think that's one of those things that will be best left to the voters. I would keep the title "face" and to me that does mean emphasis on the face. I think it would be a very enjoyable challenge! |

I think it could be either a head shot or just a face. |

I'd love to try it.
So would this be in the realm of what you mean?
And what about this?
But would this be too tight?

My original idea was to have the challenge of cropping so tight to show only the face. Almost like photographing the face as a landscape. We would really need to consider texture and lighting in a similar way to a landscape. I added the idea of allowing hair, jewellry and the neck so it wasn't too restrictive (And I figured if someone entered a super portrait of a bust or headshot it would just as likely ribbon anyway regardless of the challenge description)
Now that people are expressing interest in the "challenge" of a tight crop I'll make a new suggestion.
Challenge: Face
Description: Create a photograph that contains only a human face or part thereof. Makeup and jewellery are permitted.
I suggest that we let the voters decide whether a bit of hair, neck or clothing appearing in the photo puts it outside the description.
I added the bit about "part thereof" to allow for more creativity. So people can explore 3 quarter views or darkened/blackened areas. Of course we'll get close ups like one of the nose posted above but again I'd let the voters decide on whether they work or not.

Or...
Challenge: Face
Description: Create a photograph that contains only a human face or part thereof. The forehead and chin must be cropped in your image. Makeup and jewellery are permitted.
Any thoughts? |
