I am seriously questioning why I take pictures ... Why I exist for that matter (OK being dramatic .... please don't read this)... RANT RANT RANT WARNING! RANT!
This is the type of day I'm having: I left my wife and child this AM crabbily wondering why it's such a pain to get out of the house in the morning and wondering why I'm so crabby but somehow realizing sub consciously that it's the fact that I didn't start my own million dollar web-site and rely only on myself for a living ... anyway ....
...I decided to stop at the beach before work to non-successfully shoot a photo for Sunday's challenge (no it's not a really nice beach, there's pollution, debris, random clothing and garbage and lots of fat seagulls ... did I mention it's extremely overcast and it's ummm, Lake Erie and I'm running laaate. So I nerdilly take my stuff onto the smelly beach ... sand getting in my shoes etc). Well, I'm running late for work so I don't have time to attach the fishing line to the prop or feed enough birds to make it look they they are swarming magically ... I start sweating ... So I'm going to be post-sweaty all day at work - -YAY!
I leave the beach already late for work ... As I'm leaving I get a call from my buddy at work saying something like "Remember that job yesterday ... it was messed up and you missed it I think" ... So I'm thinking "WTF? The customer saw a proof and they supplied all the files and they were in a big hurry .. why do I exist ... etc".I have sand in my shoes that has somehow permeated my socks and is touching my feet - I wish these socks were cotton.
OK -so I get to work and my random ipod music mix has selected some depressing Flaming Lips songs that I find perfectly appropriate and wonderfully existential enough to get more down on myelf. I get out of the car and - as I always do --- grab my camera bag at the same time and put it on my back (I have a nice "Delsey" backpack that could protect my equipment with a drop from the Sears tower - assuming one thing ...it's closed ... I start walking in from the parking lot and hear the wonderful sound of plastic hitting concrete. My bag had flopped open and my camera and 2 lenses had fallen to the ground - not the sound that anyone wants to hear. This is what I get for peeking at images as I drive.
I could go on but my day is starting to get better. I think having a strog cup of coffee has helped cheer me up a bit ... It's sad that coffee has that polarizing effect on me because I know that it's not about the coffee - it's about me, damn-it. Sometimes coffee makes me extremely irritable. Good thing you didn't read this - eh? This was fun and now I feel better ... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

ahh that sucks, I cringed when I read the part when your camera droped, dam your day sucked. Sorry to hear about your camera, is it ok did any of your camera gear survive? I just heard the sound as I read that, on an gtg here in nyc i dropped my sigma lens worst sound you wanna here is camera equipment hitting cement but I picked it up and the lens filter saved it, lens is fine.
So I hope yours is or some of your equipment is ok...

I think it's Ok - there's some resistance when zooming on the one lens that I don't think was there before but it appears to work fine. That was annoying to because i have insurance on all this stuff ... maybe if i run it over with my car I can get a D80 ...
Right about now I'm thinking ... MAN AM I lame .... I actually wrote all that sh!t and posted it to a forum. Shouldn't I be plotting a way to get enough money to buy L-Glass or something rather that b!tching about little problems ?
WELLL - it is a RANT after all !!!! :]

L-Glass? Man, you own a Nikon -- don't go to the other side. :)

Sorry to hear about the camera dropping. This happened to my stylus 400 I was running to get out of the way of a falling tree limb (split by lightning day before) and dropped the damn thing. Now the cover that goes over the lense is loose and touchy so its easy to accidentally turn it off or on but otherwise works fine. |

I had just recieved my 24-105mm F4L in the mail, barely in time to play 'professional photographer' at a friend's wedding. The day of shooting went exceptionally well, despite getting REALLY wasted on a combination of pre-reception mixed drinks at the bar, reception champagne, and post-reception mixed drinks at the bar. I was all warm, fuzzy, and aglow from my success, sitting out on the patio shooting the breeze with the BF and drinking yet another tasty beverage (a cosmo this time), when I repeated the exact same maneuver as the original poster... I stood up, grabbed my (unzipped) camera bag, and watched in horror as my brand new lens tumbled to the concrete in slow motion.
It bounced. Twice.
Boy did I feel like a tool. For the better part of a month! The lens seems a bit soft, but the 24-105mm is supposedly soft in general, so I have no idea if I caused it or not. It feels a bit stiff twisting it on and off the camera, too.
Fortunately, the lens is built like a tank, and apart from a few minor scratches on the casing, it performs adequately. I still think about sending it in for servicing just for some peace of mind, over half a year later.
The moral of this story? Never leave your camera bag unzipped EVER. |

Zippers are the invention of the devil. Never trust anything but a "buckle", even if it's only one of those press-in nylon fasteners. Train yourself NEVER to move the camera without checking the "buckle" and you'll be fine.

man, I know that feeling of when you drop your camera...hard.
I was horseback riding with my friend and we were just ambling along slowly, so I decided to take some pictures since it was a nice morning. I took out my camera from my safty pouch (sock) and snapped a few succesful shots. Then I realize that I have no photos of me on a horse so we steered our horses close to eachothers and I handed it to my friend, no problem...yet. She took a couple of shots of me and then tried to hand it back to me. We slowly brought our horses close together with our hands outstretched. That's when it happened. As I grasped the camera and pulled away I realized something...She hadn't taken off the wrist strap. Then it was all in slow motion. My fingers slip off the camera, the strap falls off of her wrist, it flips three times as it falls six feet down, lands with a cracking sound on the hard dusty dirt, bounces once, her horse KICKS it, and I nearly pass out.
The worst part is that the camera was on with the lens out and the flexible LCD screen out to the side. I was a little frustrated that my friend hadn't taken off the strap before she handed it to me. Suprisingly it still works. The biggest thing is that the little lens cover doesn't close all the way when it's off. Another super-annoying thing is that there is a spot or dirt particle that's on the inside of the lens and shows up in EVERY picture. Other than that-a couple of dents, though not bad considering. |

Well, as long as we're on camera dropping duty:
Every year I go on a painting/photography trip to the High Sierras. Scenic, forests, high altitude lakes, all the good things. One evening at dusk, I was racing to get to a waterfall before the light went. Tripped over a root, went (literally) flying through the air with my 300D with Canon 10-22 lens attached, landed flat on my stomach and camera. Got up, continued on to the waterfall, got the shot and kept on through dinner (after a martini, or something else good). The camera still worked and so did I. Um, the next day, the camera still worked, I was at half-speed. The 10-22 has some dents. The 300D probably gathered another dust bunny or two.
The trip is coming up again in about a month. All my camera stuff will be protected from roots. |
