Ive slapped together a DIY budget lightbox with some PVC and foam core and a roll of white paper for a seamless background. The box is probably 4' wide, 3' deep and 3' tall. Ive got 4 shoplights with the shiny metal reflectors and I was wondering what people would recommend for bulbs?

Ive tried 100w reveals and without using WB in the camera the background appears yellowish which I would have expected from standard "soft" bulbs but the reveals kick off a pretty clean light.

Of course I can do PP to clean things up but my goal is to try and capture an image thats a bit more accurate to start with to reduce PP time.

Im guessing I simply dont have enough light should I go up to 150w bulbs and and what type would people recommend for simple still life shots?

Thanks for any input.

If you use a tripod it doent matter how bright the bulbs are.
To get rid of the color balance issue look in your manuel on how to set a custom white balance and that will fix it as long as you use the same type of bulbs for each light.

Try 200W or 250W bulbs.

Just don't start a fire.

If you are shooting still lifes, why does it matter? Use a tripod?

As for WB, do a custom one.

Keep in mind though that the WB from bulb to bulb will likely not be consistent, nor will it be consistent over the life of the bulb. So, if WB is critical, you will still have to adjust in PP or by doing a custom WB each time.

I always do that for "studio" shots, not that it helps my scores any, but the color balance is usually correct. ;^)

Thanks for the input gang.

Mainly just playing with the new camera and trying to get the lightbox itself dialed in. I am using a tripod and a variety of the cameras modes to get a "feel" for the camera with consistant subject matter before I start playing with a custom WB etc.

Where would you get foam core?

I have a dick blick art supply store by where I work, 32" x 40" x 1/8" thick (if I remember correctly) where like $5ea. You can buy a 25 pack for like $90 off the web //www.dickblick.com/zz132/02c/ but any local craft/art store should have similar.

I bought some 1" pvc pipe and some fittings which make up the frame and have the foam board cut down to length for the sides and 2 peices cut to size for the top. Across the back top edge is a PVC peice that I have my roll of white paper on which makes for the seemless backdrop/floor of the box.
