You appear to have ignored my comments on the end of your thread. The LS is quite useful because it has more flexibility than a straight diffuser: it diffuses in combination with bounced flash. It also provides quite a large area of diffusion compared to many straight diffusers.
Your test in your quoted thread did not accurately test the LS, and overlooks some of its real life advantages when taking pictures of people. I would have thought that your mystery mod/portable softbox thing would do a better job with small objects close to a background (per your test), but the LS does a very good job with people in real life portrait type situations (which do not match your test criteria).
