Pugs work sometimes, but you don't know what safe feels like until you have five ferrets. If he doesn't trip on the buggers he'll have the crap bitten out of his toes. Plus the smell would drive him away.

You should get a french mastiff. The UPS man hates coming to my house! We don't even lock our doors at night. All is well at the Turner House when Hooch is around.

John, I am so sorry to hear this has happened to you. We were burgled two months ago whilst we slept. It was very traumatic at the time, but we were not prepared for the lasting psychological problems it caused.
If you need to talk it through just PM me, anytime ;)

Hey, thanks for all the support!

It's weird, something like this happens to me and the first thing I do is post to DPC... ;-)

We're not allowed to own guns in this country. And besides, I'm not sure I would have used it if it came to the crunch. I might have felt a bit braver running down the stairs though! As for owning a dog, I don't think the cat would agree. Incidently, my dad has a Pomeranian which is a great watchdog, it starts barking when it hears a car at the end of the road.

I'm just thinking how my stupid stupid brain didn't work quicker... The seconds I lost standing in the kitchen while my brain was figuring out that cats can't open doors.

Yea Amber - I'll bear that in mind. Now the adrenalin has worn off I'm starting to feel a bit jumpy, and I keep looking out the window every five minutes in case he decides to come back. Things could have been a lot worse. I'm already imagining the nightmare scenarios of what might have happened if I'd confronted him at the door to my office, or Zach's bedroom...

One of the first things I did was email Roxanne (greatandsmall):))Even whilst the police were arriving!

We ran the gauntlet of emotions; fear, anger, relief, feeling stupid, rage and they kept repeating. We went to stay in a hotel for a couple of nights, but that just made it harder to return. Just be aware that it is all a normal reaction;)

I know that you're running everything through your mind here, but please remember that YOU DID NOTHING WRONG!!! It's natural to kick yourself, thinking "why didn't I hear him sooner?" But you are not the bad guy in this scenario. Someone broke into your house, and it's in no way your fault! This is one of those bad things in life that you just can't predict and you can't have control over--anymore than you already did.

I'm so glad that you were not harmed and that you were able to chase the thief away before he got too much.

Well, you can take some confort in the fact that he probably knows that would be risky.

Yeah, after watching over your shoulder with nightvision binoculars while waiting for you to sleep, he's probably ended up reading what nuts you associate with on this forum and decided to move to a different house. :-P
