Recently I posted a thread about raising money for my trip through Europe to write a book and what not. Someone pointed me towards the www.wherethehellismatt.com website....which led me to start emailing some companies about sponsorship for my book. I emailed about 50 different companies asking for some different types of sponsorship and whatnot.
...Only one company sent me an actual email back; Chipotle. After a few emails one of their sponsorship representatives gave me a call last Friday. They decided that they can't actually sponsor an individual on their quest to travel the world and write a book....but they did decide that they would help me put together a photo gallery so I can sell some of my prints in order to raise money for the trip. They told me they would advertise and give away free burritos as an incentive to attract people to my gallery.
I've never had the chance to put on a gallery of my photo's, but I know exactly where I want to host it at...I still need to go talk to them and get it set up though. I was thinking about having 50-70 matted and possibly framed prints on display for 2-3 days. I'm not sure how to go about the pricing, I was thinking about doing some sort of silent auction where people interested in buying photos write down their price/name/phone number and all that jazz and then we find who the highest bidder was in the end. Or....I was thinking about have set prices and people can just come in and buy them, except I'm not sure what I would charge... Also, where is the best place to buy prints online....and where is a good place to buy frames? I was thinking about building my own frames....but I'm not sure which way would be more cost worthy.
This is all very exciting for me...I'm hoping to have the gallery up and running within the next month or two, which means I could be on the road before Christmas possibly.... and like I've said before if anyone is interested in helping me out or if you just have some words of advice just let me know. |

Oh...I plan on hitting up as many DPCers as I can on my trip, whenever it happens. Good times will ensue. |

Great news Caleb! Sounds like a really good deal for you!
Why not order your prints from dpc prints? Another idea is a website that I have seen recommended called mpix. As for frames, you will probably be better off to buy them locally. I don't think you should fool with making them yourself... there just isn't enough time, and unless you are a serious woodworker, store-bought frames will look better anyway and are very inexpensive.
Good luck and keep us posted! Oh and look me up if you come through Virginia!

Hmmm....I might do like a joint thing where I sell the pictures online and in a gallery. ...or maybe just online, it really depends on if I can get a place booked around here to host a photo showing.
...if anyone knows of a place that would host a gallery of my photo's, let me know. |

One idea would be to "mat only" the prints this would save you money for your trip but still looks nice.
Then place bid sheets with each print with the title of the image and a purchase price. People could only purchase outright if there are no bids. If there are two or fewer bids, the high bidder wins at the named price. And any prints with three or more bids goes to auction at say 5 pm on the last day of your exibition. Open auctions tend to garner premium prices for premium work. Bidding frenzies aren't uncommon. And you wouldn't have to be an auctioneer to handle something like this. You would only need someone to record the bidder's number, print name, and price. |
