I just took a look at your 'Action Shot II' entry and you rec'd 5 comments (of which only one appeared to be helpful to you). I'd say that exceeds "...without a peep of justifying explanation".

I'm talking about current entries, not past. Besides, that shot sucked and I knew it. Sadly, these two are scoring worse than that despite being vastly superior photos. Fire has three very positive comments, with some light criticism that definitely doesn't warrant any 3's or 4's. Peas has yet to get so much as a "great job!" :P |

Ok...gotcha. BTW, don't hold your breath on the "great job!" as that bridge got burned about a week ago. ;^)

Yeah she got me beat too. Ever since I mentioned going for the brown ribbon award my photo as made a steady increase....it's at a whooping 4.3 now...with no comments.
Here what's going to be interesting. I'm entering my camera self portrait and I already know what's wrong with it compositionally and I want to see if DPCer vote it higher than my peas shot, which I think is a decent shot. DPC don't let me down now....lol. |

I know I'm not going to get much sympathy from the "My pic is a 3.7 so stop whining" club, but I think at all levels it's the same emotion. After you see your image 200 times while you're working on it, you can't "stand back" and see it for what it is. So, it's tough to predict what folks will vote.
I was hoping for a cover shot on "Pea Monthly - the Mag for the Discriminating Pod Lover" but I'm not going to crack the Top 10. I really need to reset my expectations so that I'm psyched I'm over 6.0 rather than disappointed I'm not about 7.0!
On a positive note, I've gotten much better constructive comments on Peas and Ground Up which help me understand what people think works and doesn't. Now, I need to raise the bar and leave better comments myself, as well.

That's an adjustment I had to make as well. It can be very difficult, but I think I pulled it off in my mind, finally. I'm actually very happy any time I break 6 now.Even if in my own mind I "deserve" more :-)
I had to make a choice; keep shooting for myself, or cater specifically to the voters. I like shooting for myself too much to give that up :-)

Hang in there. It WILL get better. Takes a few challenges to figure out what this audience is looking for. Key word - 'Audience'. Images that do poorly here may go on to win praise in other venues and vice-versa.
