I know some have done this on there on in the past and I thought it was pretty neat. How about making it a challenge.
Challenge: Landscape Quad-patch
Details: Pick a landscape location and take four pictures (one picture during each season) and create a landscape Quad-patch. Each picture should be the same subject from the same point of view and taken from the same location. So mark the spot of your tripod or where you were standing and try your best to take the same picture four times, seasons apart.
Extra Rules: Each picture must be taken during a different season (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall). If asked for the original all four photographs must be submitted. For this challenge four separate images are allowed.

How long do we have for voting ;)
(I like the idea, though I doubt I would enter myself.) |

Sounds interesting. Would need some special rules, parameters, etc...to show 4 images in one composite layout. For example in the Triptych challenge trying to show detail in combining 3 images was tricky.
How would you suggest doing the layout? |

I live in Wisconsin so this is Ideal. We have all 4 seasons and each is to the Extreme. Bitter Cold Winters with tons of snow, Blistering hot Summer everything is green, Spring is very wet and life is starting to come back to everything Fall is awesome. The colors the weather football season. I am in on this one if it happens.
Will the winners receive 4 ribbons each for the challenge? haha I know wishful thinking.

This would be a great challenge, though some may not be able to enter due to the part of the world they live in... I'd love to participate though. |

This is the kind of thing that I frequently get myself involved in (projects that take a year or longer to complete) but I don't think it would make a good challenge topic for DPC. Too narrow interest - only a small group of people would see it though.
My new year long project involves shooting sunset on the two solstices and an equinox, and to either do a panorama or a simple wide field shot capturing all three sunsets. Intriguing possibilities.... |

just because people live in a warm or cold climate doesnt mean you cant enter...be creative.
you could photograph the landscape with a person in it wearing seasonal outfits. its not the complicated.

I want to shoot a piece of cheese sitting on my counter every 4 months, would that be ok?
This could be a cool challenge but it would be extremely disapointing for people if they had worked on it a year and then won brown or got a DNMC vote for whatever reason :( |

Definitely best for temperate climates, difficult to do really well in a tropical climate.
This would work really well as an ad-hoc "challenge," something like the PaD (Photo a Day) thing. It's definitely something I'd consider doing. |

I also don't think a yearlong challenge would work well -- it just wouldn't hold the attention of many.
Within DPC's framework, it would probably be better to have four seperate challenges (one for each season) and then a special challenge for the four shots to be combined. To preserve anonymity the images put together could be different shots. That is, qualify for the special challenge with outtakes while taking the four needed.

I took a series of pictures of soup going mouldy over the course of about a month or so. Wouldn't recommend doing that for a whole year though. It'd smell. |

Well, it only took one thread page to start pooh-poohing this challenge suggestion. ;^)
I pulled a couple of quote excerpts (not saying you're pooh-poohing) that I would like to respond to:

Often we hear complaints about too many entries in challenges, can't vote on them all, etc... So what's wrong with doing something like this that might only have a few dozen challenge entries when all is said and done? Sounds like a fun idea. If we have some members with the fortitude and perseverance to complete this, more power to them!
I think the trickiest part of doing a challenge like this is putting it all together (4 images) for the voting community to get a good look at.

I'm guessing you would need to email all 4 photos for verification. |

It would be interesting to see the differences in climates. To us Winter is Snow Slush and More Slush. To others it is White Sand Beach and Palm Tree's. at worst I would develope envy for those who have the same climate year round.

Hmm, so I'm a pooh-pooher now? :P
I don't believe I have ever complained about the size of the challenges (I know you were speaking generally) -- the greater the challenge the greater the victory. However, having challenges that only intrest a few has the additional liability of being severely limiting to the rest of the community. A year-long Season challenge would eliminate any posting of images of the seasons. No first snow pics, no fall color pics, no 'my flowers are blooming' pics -- starting to sound like a good idea ;) -- you get the idea. Any of these would be out-takes to this one challenge, and out-takes are not allowed.
It sounds like a fun challenge, but the restrictions it brings to the community are too high a price to pay for something with such narrow appeal.

I think this is a neat idea, actually. Four photos is easy enough - you only need to be attentive for four days. The easiest thing to do to keep participation up is to require minimum of three but maximum of four so that if you miss one you're not out of the challenge. Set specific shooting dates in with the challenges, but with no submission capability, just as reminders. Limit the time frame for each portion to a 14 or 30 day period for validation purposes and just to keep everyone on track. Basically, put it on a schedule and set up on-site reminders, and I think you'd have a pretty good turn out for this.

I'd love to do this. Utah has such terrific seasons and fantastic scenery that this challenge would be a joy! The hard part is figuring out where to catch the beauty/fun from the many posibilities.

I think you are taking the rule about outtakes to literal. Just don't post outtakes of your landscape you plan on entering. Plus (I think) the posting of outtakes only apply within the voting period.

I understand the point you're making - however, I say :P (that would be a phhhllllttt).
We are currently in the middle of a month-long free study and images are still being posted, shared, commented on, etc... Is everything being posted now being considered "outtakes"?
The only risk of people posting seasonal images (which covers most landscapes) is losing anonymity should they post an image from the same spot and location they are using for the 4 season challenge. |
