I need a new port for where my microphone plugs into my Inspiron 9300. The warranty is now through and Dell has told me they didn't have the part in (although now I wonder because one of the reseller #s they gave me said the part # was for a USB port).

Any help here? Either navagating the Dell site so I can find the proper part # myself, or with a reasonable reseller?

You can try calling these guys. The website didn't list the 9300 but they sure have a lot of parts for other Dells. Maybe it is a standard part used in several models.

FWIW - you seem so not a Dell guy!

It's for work. I tend to build my own, but I don't really know if that's an option in laptops...

Well, there's conficting information. One Dell guy told me the part was R8383. Another said it was an integral part of the motherboard.

Basically I have a short in my microphone jack and need to find a way to replace it or work around. The second guy told me I could get an external audio card which has a mic jack for about $47.

Here's what I'd do... I'd do enough disassembly to figure out what the part looks like, take a close-up pic, then go to Digi-Key. If the connector is soldered to the MOBO, as I suspect it is, I bet Digi-Key will have it.
Of course, you'd have to replace it yourself, which may or may not be problematic depending on your soldering skills.

Found this for part numbers. It may help. It's a link to a downloadable spreadsheet.

warrantypartsdirect.dell.com/us/program/Inspiron_Part_Guide.xls

Here's the google search page where it resides if the link doesn't work from here.

//www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=%22Inspiron+9300%22+%2B+%22part+numbers%22+%2B+microphone&meta=

edit: my excel crashes when loading the spreadsheet. could be just my computer
