Can anyone suggest any good database software for keeping track of contest entries, sales, commissions, etc?
Figure I might as well do "bookwork" while I'm camera-less. *sigh*

IMatch is the favourite with professional photographers on DPReview. It's a shareware programme, offers full EXIF and IPTC support, batch processing, archiving on outside media, large thumbnails, flexible and fully interelated categories, web album templates, script writing support, etc. It costs $50, its users have a very good support from the author. It's fairly complicated, but even if you don't use all the features, with time if you develop a career out of your phtography you will need them. You can download a free 30-day trial version from
//www.photools.com
I design databases as a day-time job, and after I tried IMatch I also believe it is the best.
Portfolio 6 from Extensis is another favorite, it's a commercial programme, hence the price - $99, a bit less powerful than IMatch, but still very good.
Then there's ACDSee 5 which is perfectly capable.
The key to a good database is not only software, but its information architecture - what categories and subcategories you establish, how you relate these categories, what you want from your searches. You'll save yourself a lot of time and energy, if you sit down and make a category tree on a piece of paper. Think of all possible categories (within subject, status, quality, client, location, event, contests, etc. groups). Carry this piece of paper with you for a couple of days.
I wouldn't recommend Photoshop Album 1.0 - it's oriented towards home use - the easiest, user-fiendly interface but the programme is full of snags and bugs. Wait for 2.0, maybe all the problems will be addressed.

Thanks for the info, but that wasn't really the kind of database I wanted. I have a way to catalogue my photos. I'm looking for database software to catalogue contests, entries in contests, commission for particular photographs (I have one now for chess shots), sales of prints and customers.

Access / Excel would both be good for that. If there are any specific tracking features you'd like implemented on our site, let us know, and we'll consider them :)

I ended up putting it in excel. I hate access. I think some evil troll designed it to be purposely agrivating and unusable so that someone would have to pay microsoft to design the databases. :)
I can't think how you would add that to the site. I wanted a way to keep track of contests and deadlines and submissions mostly.
Not like I don't have time on my hands right now. Know how frustrating it was to have a beautiful day, nothing to do and NO darn camera *aarrrrgggghhhh* :)
