Maybe more like...
a lenscap lying in a field because the photographer dropped it and forgot about it.
Different from desolation because it could be an empty field, a busy sidewalk, something with lots of people or energy, just something that didn't belong because the thing or person it belongs to has left.
That's my idea of it, anyway.
