I thought I might break 6.0 with this shot and came somewhat close with a 5.798.

As a relative newbie to photography, I'd like to get some comments on how I can improve. I think the shot is slightly over-exposed. In order to get the background blur I wanted I used shutter priority to slow the shutter speed down while panning with the horses. The sun was bright and I was concerned about over-exposure but 1/320 didn't get me the blur I wanted. This was shot at 1/100. I zoomed in (optical not digital) as much as my camera could. How can I improve the shot?

Thoughts or comments appreciated.

I think the image was ok. You were up against some other horse racing images that had a different angle that were very good. This may have impacted your score some.

Thanks. I agree there were some great horse racing photos including 10th place's excellent "Mud, Sweat and Tears", which was also shot at Saratoga.

I guess I'm wondering if my camera (zoom, sensor, etc) is the limiting factor in this shot or if I could have:
- shot on a not so bright day
- changed ISO or some other setting to avoid over-exposure
- etc...

I'd like to know why I received those 3's and 4's and what I could have done to improve the shot.

That looks fine however if you want to try and control the highlights better try using AE Lock if you have that option. If you use that and meter an area that has lots of highlights you will expose for that and won't blow them out. Then just recompose the shot. You may also need to use EV compensation a bit so you don't blow out the shadows so much. If it were me I would also shoot this in Manual mode so I have full control over both the shutter speed and aperture settings allowing me to experiment further to get the balance I want in both the highlights and shadows.

Thanks LucidLotus and yanko.

I do have AE (aperature priority, right?) but that locked a shutter speed that was too fast for the blur I wanted. I guess I need to use manual mode more and understand how my own combinations of shutter and aperature effect the outcome. Not sure what EV comp is, I'll check that out. I'm guessing that's my +2 to -2 exposure bias.
The problem is I only get several burst shots when the horses pass me. Once they pass, I have to wait 30 minutes for the next race and it sure can eat up an afternoon quick!
Thanks again.
