For a week's holiday? Which one?
I've been to Melbourne before for five days, but didn't get around much because my husband was working. I wanted to do the wine thing in the Yarra Valley region.
Perth is closer to Thailand but I don't know much about it. Any thoughts?

I lived in Perth for about 10 years. Highly recommend it although I imagine it would be a lot quiter then Melbourne or Thailand.
It has a lot of natural beauty and is very clean and well maintained,if you go make sure you go out to Rottnest island, great place to unwind also lot of great vineyards around Perth in the Swan valley.
In summary Perth is the second best city in Australia.

I am a Perth girl. I was born there. I moved to Sydney/Blue Mountains for 11 years before moving back to WA for 13 years. I have now been a Queenslander for 12 years. Queensland is my home.....but I am a Perth girl.
Melbourne is beautiful...but Perth is heaven. Start in Perth and choose a direction. Every direction will be something different....from the wildflowers of the South West to the red earths of the Northern area...and the bush and desert regions of the East. There are a couple of thousand kilometers of beach...so you should be able to find privacy....and WA is known for its love of parks....that will keep you busy enough.
Melbourne has shopping and lots of beautiful scenes...but Perth is a different world. You decide.

Kate, if you have already been to Melbourne, and Perth is closer to you I would choose Perth. I am like Judi, and now live in Queensland, born here, but lived in Albany, Western Australia for over 30 years. We then move to Melbourne for two yeas, until we move up here to Qld four years ago
Perth is a one of the most beautiful cities in Australia, and so easy style living. Within a two hour drive one can visit wineries, surf beaches, magical scenery everywhere, and crystal blue waters. Caves not that far away, and also tall Karrie forrests.
The wildflowers around September, are world famous. The wineries some of the very best Australia has to offer. A great night life in the city of Perth and Fremantle. Great sporting events, and also great seasonal shopping.
It may be quieter than the hustle and bustle of Melbourne, but it has a feeling all of its own, and just so friendly. Why not visit Perth and its surrounding districts, via the web, re the Tourism of Western Australia and see for yourself, and then decide.
Love to know what decision you make and maybe one of these days you may even come to Queensland as we would love to see you...

Go Perth!!!!
What time of year are you planning on? Because it's pretty wet both in Perth and Melbourne at the moment. Yesterday we had(in Perth), wind and rain but today was beautiful! We have the best beaches, if you want to see the red dirt head a couple of hours north or east, if you want to see the Karri forrests, lakes, caves etc head south. As Sherpet said Albany is beautiful (about 4 hours south of Perth). We have a lovely zoo, Kings park and the Swan river. W.A rocks!
In saying all that I've never been to Melbourne! |

From a photography point of view...
Go to Melbourne for urban, night scenes, botanical gardens and of course the wineries...
Hit Perth for wild gardens, beaches and forests.
I'm from Melbs... so I may be biassed... but there's also the live music scene... the Yarra (despite how dirty it may be)...
Wherever you go... Enjoy it! |

And while you are there take a day trip to Rottnest Island. Known for it's Quokkas...even though they say you can see them elsewhere I have not heard of anyone seeing them anywhere else. Here is a link to them.
Quokkas!
Also the last time I was there the only motorized transport was an old bus and police vehicles...all other transport is pushbike...so as not to disturb the wildlife...or so they say. I reckon most people are to drunk from sitting in the sun overlooking the beach at the pub all day..lmao!!

Some shots from W.A
Point Peron Rockingham 40 mins south Perth
Warnbro Beach Sunset 40 mins South Perth
Bridgetown 2.5 -3hours South Perth
Safety Bay 40 mins South Perth
I don't have any North shots yet as we were in QLD for the last 3 years and thats where I got into photography, so I've still got plenty to shoot here.
