So, I had a pretty good show, all told. Sold a few prints, and did a lot of portraits, made some good leads in the local area. All in all pretty positive. I paid for day care and framing... ;-)

But... a nice man came in and was looking around my work. he asked about the portrait special i had going, and i explained it to him. he said he'd go for it. so, we walked over to my stylish exterior location (steps of the old luggage depot of the train station), and i took a few of head shots.

he started to talk aobut local photographers coming back to the gallery space, asking if i knew any local photgraphers. well, as i was away for 12 years, not really - i don't know anyone. then he asked my favourite portrait photgraphers. of course, i was stumped. so i rattled off the few names i could come up with and then trailed off in embarassment. then he asked about canadian portraitists. well, all i could come up with was yosuf karsh, whose early work i really like...

then he mentioned 'someone local, uh, hines...?' o, i said, sherman hines, yes, i don't know his portrait work, but his landscape work is very good indeed. we talked about other stuff, chose the shot he wanted for his 8x10, then got down to the nitty gritty. so, sir, your name and address? he gave me his address, then said, my name is quite hard to spell, let me give you my card...

bloody sherman hines!

i told him he was a very naughty man, and he told me off for not having visited his museum. i said i had been extremely busy for the last two years (child, changing continents, being orphanned...), but planned to remedy that forthwith... i'm going to deliver his portrait in person...

o, and he emailed me today a flyer for his workshop this weekend. i can't go, but it's nice to be considered...

if he didn't like my work, he wouldn't have had a portrait done, would he?

That is so cool! Who knows? Maybe your portrait will replace the current one on his home page! :)

hmm, let's see...

replace the one by yosuf karsh, world famous photographer, with one by christian stalley, local small time photographer and stay at home mum...

well, we can dream...

(sadly, that thought had crossed my mind... o, the delusions we harbour...)

Very well done. You never know, maybe he just wants a like minded friend.

You should invite him over for a family setting type dinner and keep him in mind if you want to do weekend shooting... Tell him it's casual and you can bring what you like. Plan to be specific on the time spent shooting... You wouldn't want to feel like you were rushing him ;)...

It gets lonely at the top... And everyone likes like-minded friends.
