Since I broke my habit over DPC(!!!) I had more time last weekend, and I went out to take some pictures. The weather was excellent, many people were out picnicking, playing games in the park... protesting war... whatever. I never knew though people had an anxiety over an SLR type cameras. Almost all the places I went and shoot photos, people were asking me if I was from a newspaper or from a magazine. No one gave me hard time, but I felt the change on people... mostly good. I had to tell everybody that I take pictures for personal use.

My friend at work told me that next time I should tell them "I am freelance photographer"...

I gave my card with my personal email on them to some, and took their email addresses to send pictures. I already sent a few.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you, and maybe some of you had similar experiences.

Next time say you are Peter Parker and you work for the Daily Bugle :P

Asked if we worked for a newspaper for the first time at the GTG Berkeley Kite Festival.

I know what you are talking about. A P&S camera (since everyone has one) doesn't demand the respect of a SLR. And, I think, most people equate a SLR camera with some level of professional.

Go into a crowd with a P&S camera and start pointing it at people and they wonder if you are some sort of perv out to put thier photo on the net... do the same with a SLR and they start to wonder if thier picture is going to be in the newspaper. Little do they know ;-)

Yes, the dSLR commands respect. Especially if it is black with a big-ass lens on it. Definitely tell people you are a freelancer. They love that.

I have wanted to post this for approximately forever and haven't found a good place to do so, and because I was just thinking of it earlier today this thread gets the dubious honor...

My P&S is wonderful and deserving of *loads* of respect because when I take self portraits, I don't have to use a cardboard setup, or run back and forth between my camera and where I need to be, in order to focus.

YAY FOR P&S CAMERAS!!

So THERE!

Heeheehee.

Yes Kelly - the swivel LCD is a very neat technological invention :)

Yes, the police and the security guards notice you more too. But that's another story ;)

*giggle* If I ever get a dSLR I will have to make this feature a top priority so I do not join the throngs of people at DPC who complain about self-portrait focus issues.

edit to add:

SO THERE!

another edit:
I can never tell, online, when I'm being funny and when I'm being stupid.
I think I'm gonna go to bed now. ;-)

some dSLR's already have a "live view" on the LCD - won't be long before they have a swivel LCD slapped onto one of the bodies too.

Ohhhhhh.

Okay. I thought... yeah.
I thought you meant that dSLRs had a swivel LCD. Thus making my claims of "P&S respectableness because of not having focusing issues" an invalid point.

Um.

So I don't have a swivel LCD but find it amazingly wonderfully easy to take self-portraits anyway?

So yeah... I think I have answered the question of funny vs stupid, at least for now. :-)
