Reuters news agency admitted on Sunday that it had digitally altered a photograph of an Israeli attack on Lebanon on Saturday, showing more smoke than was actually present.
The photograph, as initially published, showed an aerial view of Beirut after an IAF attack, with two large pillars of smoke rising over the city. The caption read: Smoke billows from burning buildings destroyed during an overnight Israeli air raid on Beirut's suburbs.
The agency has since withdrawn the photograph, issued an apology and released the unaltered picture. Its public relations department said the photographer had been suspended until the investigation was completed.
Reuters was notified of the alteration by American bloggers who noticed repeating patterns within the smoke plumes, indicating that part of the image was duplicated several times.
The scene was photographed by Adnan Hajj, who had also photographed the aftermath of the Israeli attack on Kana last week, in which the Lebanese initially claimed 58 fatalities, but could later only confirm 28.

I am shocked!
Not by the manipulation of the press to skew reality in a certain direction - that goes on all the time despite many people's blind-eye attitude.
I am shocked at how bad that cloning job is. Were it not for that, he would likely have received a promotion rather than suspension. |

Nobody's even mentioned the possible political consequences underlying the intent of the change -- to make the effect of a certain military action seem more serious than it actually was. |

"To the trained eye, you're not going to get away with doing this for very long," McHugh told CBC News.
I don't think this one really takes a trained eye.
GeneralE is right, the question is did he do for political purposes or his own purposes. If he was willing to go this far how much further would he push it. Of course with his apparent photoshop skills I don't think he could do much more.
The shot that I fully expected to be revealed as a fake or at least staged was the men on the roof top watching the television with the bomb blast in the the background.

Just wait till all of you discover just how many of the photos & video clips you see in the news are staged/faked.
I love the one with the body in the explosion where a close observance reveals he has no dust on him, he's holding his cap between his arm and body, and somehow found himself wrapped repeatedly with wire. And later a photograph shows him giving aid to refugees.
Do a search for Pallywood. You might find a lot of well recognized news clips were merely stage films. |

There is a an international report here:
//www.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=10010
with sections on press abuse by all of the countries in the region, including (to put the other side to the Saj's anti-Palestinian POV) Israel.

Yes but do you agree that its wrong to publish doctored up photos just for more sensationalism? If you can agree to that then I understand. And I agree that anyone no matter which side you are bias to that does this is wrong for doing so. thanks

Hey legal I just read the article from 2004 that you posted the link to. I cannot find what your talking about. It may be that I am looking in the wrong place. Can you show me what it is your refering to as abuse? I do see where they talk about certain regimes controlling the media which we know occurs but this thread is about the media doctoring up stuff is it not so are we talking about the same kind of abuse? |

Apologies if my comment was not clear: theSaj was promoting an anti-Palestinian movie by a pro-Israel film maker which promotes the view that Palestinians distort the news by manipulating the media. I was simply highlighting that there is abuse of the press throughout the region, including by Israel. Abuse takes many forms, of which recent complaints about doctoring imagery are one (there is a fairly neutral wiki on point //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_coverage_of_the_Israeli-Palestinian_conflict ) and selective reporting are another.
Edit to add: (in case you missed them) there are country by country reports linked from that central site.

Hey legal yeah I went and looked at the israel link and found more of abuse done to reporters. This being the case in point of the website trying to allow more free press. did not really see any abuse by reporters. that was my confusion. But as for thesaj pallywood post I have to say that is was an interesting clip. The undfortunate thing is none of us are there to see it from a first person perspective. |
