Is it the general consensus that we'll meet at the Portland Zoo on Saturday, August 12th?
And if this is the case, what would be a good meeting time? |
I could definitely make it to the Zoo on the 12th, so that sounds good to me...

Everybody want to go to the zoo? Or would we like to meet elsewhere?

I think I'm up for the zoo on the 12th. I could always bail, as usual, at the last minute. I'm training for the portland marathon and I'm up to the big runs on the weekend which eats up a large portion of the day (my wife runs too, but we have to do it separately to watch the kids).
I think the butterfly hours are 10-6. not positive about that. I wouldn't worry about special photographer hours, I've taken plenty of good pictures in there while there were 20 screaming 2nd graders running around.

I'm a patron member as well. I can get two others in with me as well as free passes to the Butterfly exhibit.
I'm up for earlier the better to avoid the crowds somewhat.

Well, the zoo opens at 9:00 AM. Do you want to meet then, chat and talk whilst maybe shooting some of the other attractions (I always like the sea lions in Sutter's Cove) and then hitting the butterfly exhibit as soon as it opens at 10:00?
Thomas, are you planning on driving up or staying at someone's house the night before? You are welcome to stay here, we have extra rooms. There's room for your dad too if he wants to come.
Looks like between cislander and myself we can get four more people in free. I'm sure we can exchange free tickets for promises of 10 votes in the future...

9am sounds good for a meeting time.
I don't know when we're driving up (my dad and I, and possible Perry [madhatter] if he is around), but I will let you know (and thank you for the generous offer!)
What about food? Do we just want to buy what's available around there (which I don't know what is available), or do we want to bring food along?

What kind of food would be available? Well fine french dining of course. White linen table cloths, and white glove service. And the frog legs are very very fresh there.
Of course, you could always steal the elephants peanuts. They're roasted I hear. |

So, the elephant's nuts are roasted?
Are you sure it isn't just the abnormally hot weather we've been having lately? They actually roast them?
I̢۪m sorry, but I don̢۪t think I could eat the elephant̢۪s nuts, roasted or otherwise.
Do they have a spotted owl exhibit?

I can tell you I'm likely to have to disappear before 12:00. I've never really eaten the zoo food, but I'm sure it isn't all that grand and will be quite overpriced... |

Until this morning, I had never been to the Oregon Zoo. Now that I have been there, I see no reason ever to return.
I suppose there may be a worse zoo somewhere in the world, but I have yet to see one. Of course, I grew up with the Los Angeles and San Diego Zoos, so I'm probably zoo spoiled.
BTW, I believe the elephant's nuts were roasting today. It was hot!

Sorry I missed out on the last couple days of conversation here... I was backpacking in Indian Heaven wilderness area -- beautiful place with lakes and mountain views -- incredible. Then we stopped at the falls on the White Salmon river and filled my memory card with pictures of the yahoos taking rafts and kayaks over the falls. I'll put some pictures in my portfolio tonight.
The zoo is fine with me -- it will surely be crowded. There is "food" available at the zoo, but it's pricey.
I'm definitely planning to shoot Smith Rock before summer is over -- if not this Saturday I'll be heading over on an upcoming weekend.
The Three Capes Scenic Drive at the coast could be nice too -- we could spend a little time on each cape.
We could also meet in my back yard to take pictures of the interesting things that seem to be growing in my pond. If we choose to do this, it would be nice if someone could bring a lawn mower and a weed-whacker (maybe a brush-cutter) -- The rest of us could get some good action shots that way. I'll supply the lemonade. :P

Sounds like a good plan to me, although there is still the food issue. Personally, the idea of eating at the zoo sounds expensive and fairly nasty to me. But if other people wanna do that, it's all good. =)
edit:
or maybe pack a picnic sort of lunch into the zoo? we could all bring schtuff and eat it out on the lawn there...maybe?

This all sounds fun. It's too bad that work has commandeered pretty much my entire day on Saturday for server maintenance.
My wife went and saw the butterflies a couple weeks ago, and she says she'd rather go midweek when it's not teeming with children. The butterflies never sit still long enough to get a good look at with that many children around.
Have fun! |

OKAY.
I am going to be authoritative and all that.
So far, the VIP list includes:
Me and my dad (at least)
Thomas (Zoomdak) and David (charliebaker)
Mick (micknewton) and Becky (buckwheat)
Chuck (cislander)
Joe (ace flyman)
Brian (ourwebstop)
Jason (DrAchoo)
Maybe:
Perry (madhatter)
So that's food for at least 10 or 11 people that we're going to be needing...Anyone planning on bringing extra family members, just out of curiosity? Does a picnic/potluck sort of thingamajig sound do-able?
So we meet at the zoo at 9am, shoot things for an hour, shoot butterflies at 10 till noon-ish, then eat (something, somewhere, somehow) and then head off on our merry little ways. Right? I haven't been to the zoo in a while, but should we set a meeting place for people, or shall I just tattoo DPC OREGON on Rianna's forehead?

I like the tattoo idea.

We could also go down to Washington Park below the Zoo and picnic in the Rose Garden. Beautiful images abound there and plenty of grass.
edit: I like the potluck idea. I'll bring fried chicken!

I will have to leave around 11 so I'll let you guys all figure out the food part. We can certainly meet at the enterance so as to allow some people to get in free with the members.

I like the Washington Park idea, too...meeting at the entrance seems logical...and fried chicken sounds awesome to me. =) So should we do the whole all-american fried chicken/chips/potato salad/drinks sort of thing? If so, who would like to bring what? I know Becky makes a fairly edible potato salad... *hint* =)

I like the tattoo idea too, but for some reason Rianna doesn't seem real enthused...She says white t-shirts and black sharpies work much better.

I will tell her you said so. However, if you want potato salad, then you better bring your own because we won't be there.
