I'm going to be in San Diego from Aug 5-11 and will have a reasonable amount of non-work time to take pictures especially on Aug 5 and 6.

Looking for good places/things to take pictures.

I'm familiar with the regular attractions SeaWorld, zoo etc. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

It's been awhile since I've lived there but some of my favorite places in and around San Diego (that also happen to have some great photo-ops) are Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter Downtown, Seaport Village, Balboa Park, Belmont park, La Jolla shores, Del Mar, Mission Beach, Bazaar del Mundo in Old town (if it's still there) and Coronado Island.... just to name a few. Pretty much anywhere you turn in San Deigo, you're bound to find a pretty picture. :-)

Have a wonderful time! :-)

Yikes, kinda late for a reply but you can take a quick look at my pix and they are mostly San Diego. There are a few general areas that you'll probably want to hit in no particular order.

//rkligman.smugmug.com The 2006 gallery is best choice for a quick look.

The Water Front. This is where my Tall Ship pictures are from, the Midway, Seaport Village. This is just west of downtown and sits on San Diego Bay. When you land at Lindburgh field, you are right on the Bay.

Downtown, Gaslamp Qtr. Between 4th and 6th ave. running from the Convention Center on the South end to 1/2 mile north. This is full of restaurants and artsy places. All the Oil Paintings you see in the start of 2006 is from last weekend in the Gaslamp.

Balboa Park. Just east of downtown, like a few blocks. A huge park containing lots of interesting muesuems, the Zoo, Rose Garden, etc.

Littly Italy. On India Street a few blocks north of downtown and a few blocks east of the waterfront. Lots of little shops and restaurants.

Old Town. Keep going north from downtown and Little Italy for a couple miles. They changed the era from Spanish to early 1850's. Haven't been there since the change. (A sore spot for locals).

Coronado. Home to Hotel Del. Georgious beaches and a view of downtown from across the bay.

Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla. Several miles west of downtown. Mission Beach is where you go to get in the water. Has a boardwalk. Ocean Beach has a pier and is really kind of quaint. Sunset Cliffs. A series of small parking lots where you can walk out over the ocean. (Careful!). La Jolla, where the beautiful people go.

That should keep you busy. That downtown area though has lots within just a couple miles radius.

Lot's of Cool "Urban Trees" down by the water right now as well. Head down to Seaport Village and you can get some cool boat shots... the SD dlsr is down there in the Star of India on the 12th so I'll be hitting that this weekend.

You're a regular calendar of events. Sounds like things are really happening this weekend. I didn't know the Ren Faire was happening this weekend though. I'll have to think about that one.

So what's up with the Adventurers? And what is going on at the Star?

Urban trees! Is that what they call them? Check this out. This is one of them.

The August (on the 12th) SD dSLR Photo Club group shoot will start around the Star of India and go from there. No agenda just a bunch (35 to 40 show up) of digital (dslr) photogs milling about the area helping or being helped. Ages is from 10 years to quite seasoned... People wander around in groups watching and learning different techniques of others.

November we (SD dSLR) are getting Photo Authorization (passes) from the Transit Authority to ride the trolley and shoot photos all day without being hassled by the unboard security. They have shown interest in using some of the shots for their marketing purposes. They are calling this one "A day in the life of the SD Trolley"

The Admin (it's a website turned photo club) sets up cool things from time to time. We had a private tour of Petco Park which added a few more elements that the public tours didn't see.

It's a fun gig...no equipment wars, no egos, just a fun bunch of photogs to shoot with. A lot of Leads to hook up with (sports shooters, Portrait shooters, Travel Brochure shooters etc.)

SD's Group is quite cool as we have peeps coming down from the LA area for the meets. Many will attack a restaurant after a morning of shooting together. Lot's of fun...check it out sometime.

One of the members, who is in the Navy, rotated to the the east coast had so much fun here, he started a similar Board/Group based on the SD dSLR group. Hampton Roads dSLR group Which I beleive is in Virgina.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, they are most appreciated.

Andy, I'm staying on Harbour Island. Also I'm way too familiar with the Aircraft Carriers in fact that is why I'm out here. I work for the Navy (civilian) and will be spending most of the week on the Nimitz and Reagan.

I'm giving serious thought of going up to the glider port in addition to visiting some of the numerous suggestions. Some of the guys from work were telling me about it. Now I just have to find my way there.

thanks again

Stop in at Anthony's Star of the Sea (by the sailing ship on the Embarcadero) and say hi to marlene and/or martine for me :-)

That would be fairly difficult since it isn't Anthony's any more. I believe the same owners have it but they changed the name and the format just slightly. I believe they went slightly casual because that was the trend in that area.

I was looking at those ships last night! As you probably know, the Reagan came into port and a sailor was found to have TB. After testing everyone, they found 129 cases of inactive TB! Like they say, it's like living in a 1/4 mile city.

I know, I was onboard working right after they got back. Didn't know about the TB until after I left and flew home. Good news is my initial test was clear. Now I just have to wait 3 months and make sure.
