if you had your choice of these two cameras, which would you choose and why?

Fugi FinePixâ„¢ 3800
HP PhotoSmart 850xi

I've now had TWO defective Kodak LS443s and I'm giving up on them. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I would probablly go for hte HP, I did a side by side feature comparrision and the HP has more options on the provided features over the Fuji. Im not sure about the quality of either of these cameras. I based this purley on the available features of each camera.

check out DPreview.comand check out the side by side camera feature thingy

Personally I wouldn't buy either of those cameras. I'm not sure about the HP camera totally, but I haven't seen very many award winners coming from them and none of the salespeople anywhere have recommended them.

As for the Fuji, I'm sure it will take nice pics, but I've looked at that camera and you will not have the necessary control that you'll want when taking tricky challenge shots.

In the last 5 months I've bought a Olympus C5050 for myself and a Fuji S602Z for my wife. I really like both of them. My wife loves her Fuji. I think Fuji makes nice cameras in general, but you're going to want more control than the 3800 will allow. The first time I posted with my C5050 I got a ribbon. It must be the camera!

Those are my thoughts on it anyway. I'd save up for the S602z if you do go with Fuji. Good luck!!

I would go with the Fuji over the HP anytime. Does the 3800 have full manual control? Can't remember - but I loved my 2800Z, best value for money out there.

Ed

PS. I've played with the HP, but only a little. Found it too wierd, and not sure about the image quality either

Ed, what size is the thread on the front of your camera? I'm gonna be stuck with an adapter tube from the kodak and was wondering if it would fit. Do you have the adapter tube for yours?

No - and the manual doesn't say. I'd be really surprised if it matched though ;-)

The first one...the exposure meter went bad in less than a month. The LCD screen went bad and never worked right outdoors.

The second one...tells me the memory card is locked...it isn't and still works in the first camera.

I'm leaning toward the finepix s602 at this point. I just have to wait for gateway to tell me that the order on the defective camera has closed and they'll send me the new one.

Sigh...so much for using my weekend off to work on shots for a stock house.

It isn't. I found fuji's site and they want $50 for the adapter, but 47st photo on ebay has them for $16. I've bought from them before and trust their products.

Ed, one other thing...do you use compact flash or smartmedia in your s602? How large of a card do you use and how many shots can you fit? I'll be returning the 128 meg sd card with the kodak and have 2 16, 1 32, and 1 64 meg compact flash cards lying about from the old kodak and a palm computer. wondering how much more memory I'll need right off.

thanks for your help on this.

Did it hust happen to be the defective hardware, or was there poor picture quality too?

I think it's just defective hardware. As for picture quality, feel free to check my portfolio here...they were all taken with the LS443.

This is true Pitsaman. When I had my Olympus C-3000z I purchased a 2x teleconverter though, so I too have 6x zoom and 5MPx. Get the 602z Shar, you won't be sorry. It has 55mm tubes. Check //www.2filter.com for tubes. I think I got a 55mm-55mm for my wife's cam for $15 and the 55mm-52mm was about the same (So she can use my 52mm filters). It's a very high quality cam that is very versatile. The 3800 to my knowledge does not have full manual control where I know the s602Z does. I bought my wife a 512M CF card (Sandisk ultra at bhphoto.com for 159 bucks) and I don't think she's ever filled it up. I think it will hold about 300+ pics.
