While sitting in a doctors office, I get this frantic call from a friend; "Don are you in town? I'm broken down and can't make it to a Bridal that is in an hour. Do you have your camera with you? Can you help me out? She has already fixed her hair amd makeup, I can't reschedule. Please help ..."
Sure no problem, off I go, arrive about half hour early, check the garden out, half is closed due to construction, bright sunlight and lots of tree shadows in the open part. No problem. Hummmm so where is the new bride to be ... yup 45 minutes late, got lost. Now there is four other brides fighting for the best garden props. No problem to work we go ... oh ya and only 99 degrees!
So here's a few, hope she'll be happy.

Very well done, especially on such short notice. I particularly like the one with the selective desat.

Good work. I bet she will be happy, these are some great shots. Must have been tough between the short notice and the heat. |

Wow. Great images. I guess it's good to have contacts/friends that can take ones place.

You know....these photos remind me of a question I've had for quite some time.
You say this is a "bride-to-be" meaning she hasn't had the ceremony yet? Laying in the grass (even carefully) and bringing the gown around her on a wall, etc...how the heck do you keep the gown in good shape for the wedding? Seems like most brides would want it to be pristine for the actual ceremony.
Anyone else wonder about that?
Nice photos btw. I like the b/w the best.

I always wondered about "Bridal" photos. I never quite understood when they were taken??? The same day as the wedding or do they get all done up and do it at an earlier date or later date?? They always confused me. Me not being a girly-girl, I never had one done (I never knew there was a difference)LOL! Just have the ones taken on the day of the ceremony.
Can you be just a "Bridal" photographer and not do weddings? :) I ask this because shooting weddings scares the bejesus out of me but Bridals look like they'd be fun to do.
You did a great job, the one with the big chunky black boots cracks me up. :) |

I'll tell the bride to bring along a white sheet. (then I usually have a spare in my van just in case she forgets) We have her sit or lay on it and then tuck the sheet up underneath her dress so that it's not visible.
I've done quite a few this way ...

The bridal photos around here are taken weeks before the wedding and interesting enough the tux and dress are rentals. Some folks will rush around on their wedding day to take pictures too though. |

Generally, the bride wants to have the bridal pictures on display at the reception. So we shoot them a few weeks ahead of time - sufficient time to get the images chosen / edited / printed / framed before the big day.

Absolutely. And bridals are a LOT more fun. :-)

Thank you Welland and David. :) I feel very enlightened now, but somewhat less of woman for not knowing these things. LOL!
I'll have to look into this Bridal thing. I just assumed the photographer that was shooting the wedding would shoot the bridal portrait as well. |

I used to do my weddings "menu style" - you order exactly what you want (engagements pictures, bridals, formals, wedding, reception, etc). And the trouble was, people were all the time getting someone else to shoot the engagement pictures and bridals (my two most favorite) and I was left doing nothing but the wedding pictures (the most stressful of all).
Well... I finally figured out why other photographers sell their services as packages. My packages now include the engagement shoot for free (the idea is to get to know the couple long before the big day), and the bridals and wedding / reception all together. So now I'm shooting a lot more of the fun stuff. Packages work. :-)

I've talked to many pro-wedding photographers as I see them everyday I'm at work. I work at a location where many couples come to take their wedding pictures. They also come here to take shots when they have kids.
I think the record was maybe about 12 different couples taking their bridal/groom shots in 1 day. All time record is probably more. Lot's of wedding day shots on the weekends now that it is summer.
If I ever find a Pentax SMC-FA* 85mm F1.4 I would love to do bridal/announcement shooting.

Thanks ya'll.
Yes it was here actual wedding dress, we had two white sheets. When she was walking she held her dress up high so it would not drag. She made a mistake and told me she was wearing "tall black hooker boots"; well knowing that I just had to get a few pics of them ;)
When we got to the place of the shoot we layed the sheets down and she stepped onto them. We then would push the edges of the sheets unter her dress. The laying on the grass is always fun but takes a little more care doing the same thing. Her dress had BIG hoops and it was funny watching and helping her to sit and lay down. Being a little girl (size) when she layed bown the hoops really gave her a big bottom ;).
She getting married on the 18th of August so this was two weeks before. Time to get photos printed, matted and framed to display. This also gave time to send to some papers if she wanted them in the newspapers. AND if the dress gets a little dirty time toget it cleaned around the bottom. Her mom was there to help so it went pretty smooth.
The funny things is when my friend called and asked, he checked with the girl and her mom to make sure it was ok. He called back and said that they knew me. Actually the mom and my wife were good friends and I also knew them quite well, had lunch with her mom and dad a couple of times.
All in all a great time. |

All very nice. Beautiful bride too. You did her justice! She was very lucky you were nearby!
I hope you don't mind but I spent some time painting one of your shots for fun....I'm learning Corel Painter and brides seem to be the hardest to paint.
Hope I didn't mess it up too bad!
