Man, if I ever actually came across a luna moth I think I would wet my pants with excitement. I remember when I was 10 or so finding an atlas moth. I just wanted to stare at it for hours and felt like it was so unfair that I couldn't just have it around all the time.

I just wish we had Lunas in the west. I haven't seen one in the wild, so it would be quite nice, not the wetness though. :0 |

We have them in our neck of the woods (Virginia). Haven't seen any recently - are they out and about this time of year? I'll have to look. |

I found a luna one time and mounted it in a frame. It lasted about 3-4 years but finally was ruined in a move. That was the only one Ive ever seen, and before I was a photographer.
On another note, do any of you use Macro ring flashes? I have had to use the built in flash on the 30d alot becuase of movement. Not sure If I want to spend th bucks on the macro flash.
I also use a efs 60 macro lens that makes me get REAL close ot the bugs hehe. However it doubles as a great portrait lens so I went with that over the 100mm. I have a few decent bug shots, and they were all alive. Im not sure if I want to kill the bugs or not. That kind of negates the point of nature photography.

A good flamable hair spray. I am serious you just spray till it stops in the position you want. If for some reason it doesnt cooperate you can light the hair spray as your spraying it and it will for sure stop in motion after that.
This seriously does work.
Note.
If you feel hungray 'dont be scared' digest only after scorching. |

Freezing works well but when they wakeup it scares the crap out of you.

This one in particular. He woke up after about 3 minutes.
One note. If you refreeze they seem to die as was the case with an orange bug I was trying some shots with.
I do think living bugs look more natural in photos if you can see their legs:)

I'm glad I didn't try to freeze these two guys...it just wouldn't be the same shot if they were staying still!

Hey kenskid, you have a photo of that same orange bug I found today. Any idea what it is? Very unusual.

Yeah...he is an Assassin bug (one type anyway...there are many). They wait on plants until a bug comes along and then stick their pointy beak in there and suck out the insides!
I have another (see below), he was entered in a challenge!
