Hey I just thought of something - of course it really is a longshot but does anyone know anyone who has a helicopter or small place - they would be able to spot a car better from the air??

just a thought

i am sure a plane or helicopter wouldnt be able to distinguish one silver car from another unfortunately

but maybe someone could get a skywriter to donate their services

I keep a seperate window open with the myspace on it. I go to it periodically and "refresh" it. Sometimes I get a screen that tells me there are technical difficulties. I redo the page and it is fine. This doesn't happen too much though. I have been keeping up with this since Monday-about 20 hours a day.

The last post suggested a "skywriter" anyone know of one. Please contact them then contact them at email

EXCELLENT IDEA! Thanks!

Any chance of passing out fliers to these guys? They will be patrolling anyway. Maybe they'd see something.

Another thought I had today... Can you look for his car registration and insurance card? Most of us have a file cabinet or something where we keep bills and documents. If his registration is due soon or his insurance is up, he shouldn't be going too far. It may be helpful in learning more...

Also, is there anything else you can tell us about Steve? Other hobbies and stuff. I've exhausted searches containing his name and photograph/billiards. Is he involved in any camera clubs? Golf? Volunteer anywhere? Etc.

I have your cell phone number and will call you with any significant news. Don't hesitate to call me if you'd like an update, or if you hear anything that might not have been posted here.

Have a safe trip,

Just to let you guys know, if you didn't already, myspace ALWAYS has problems, their server gets overloaded extremely easy and frequently, so there shouldn't be any need to worry about his page, noone else can see theirs either at these times

You be safe, too. I'd suggest check-in phone calls in pre-determined intervals or something.

The email is

findmydad@kandofam.com

To my knowledge, there is no other website dedicated to Steve's info other than Myspace.

FYI--we (family) are in the process of opening a paypal account to help Orion and Iva with expenses--this will not be a reward account. I don't have all the info now, but will soon and will post here ASAP. They have spent a lot of money getting to AZ and on other things directly related to finding Steve.

As soon as the account is created, I will write out all the information so that no one is left asking questions. My nephew is very responsible and reliable and will not spend a penny on anything other than finding his dad.

You know..maybe I am being just plum stupid here, but if he decided to take off in the wilderness there..wouldn't you think he would leave his car somewhere and go walking? Now never being there I wouldn't know the first thing about the parking but has the authorities looked at each individial parking areas around there or even flown a helicopter around to see if they can spot a car like his? Something needs to be done fast and this all makes me want to head down there and start searching myself. Wishing I could do more so I'll just keep praying.

Sorry - just realized I said place instead of plane

Jennifer - Please call me personally regarding the paypal account as soon as it is set up - I have a paypal account already and my information is in for quick withdrawal

Thank you everyone again - Candy

IN case you didnt know...you can only withdraw $500 per calender month from the date it's opened from PayPal. Also, if you do withdraw, it takes some time to actually get the money.
Transfer to checking - 3-4 days, free
They send you a check - 1-2 weeks, $1.50 fee
ATM (requires a PayPal ATM card) - Instant, $1.00 fee
I found that out the hard way after selling some stuff on EBay. Had to wait to get my own money.
2 other options I could suggest
1. Post an address to mail a check or money order.
2. Western Union.

Editd to correct some info

Hmmm, what a papypal pain in the rear! I just opened one, dang. I'll figure something out.

This is what I am thinking right now. I will go ahead with the Paypal but I will also open a USBank account specifically for Steve's stuff. I will then wire money to O as it comes in.

Is this a stupid idea or is this workable??? I just don't want O to have to do anything but look for his Dad. He specifically asked me to take care of this for him and I can't let him down.

Sonja,

The National Park Service and Arizona Parks Department have been notified. Parking lots at state and national parks are typically patrolled by police -- who would know to be looking for Steve's car.

Ok, looking at a map of the area, something jumps out to me. There's a TON of campgrounds inside a half days drive. Has anyone hit the state park service, or even the national park service and verified that he's not using a campsite as a base of operations? I often park at state/national parks and walk for part of the day. They typically take license plate numbers when registering at the entrance, and are typically very cheap. If he wants a relatively safe place to park his car while he's shooting, that's where I'd aim, and I don't know if police bulletins for missing persons are quickly communicated to them.

The state parks of AZ may have a computerized DB with that information and they might be able to look it up. Same with the National Park service. I donno, but that just jumped out at me when playing with the maps. All are places where you'd get great vantage points for monsoon lightning. Just a thought.

Let me know if there's anything I can do from CO to help.

I have been in daily communication with a WONDERFUL contact at State Parks and she has sent the alert out to the parks here in AZ. Also, there are a few state parks within an hour of Steve's home that he really likes, and they are all actively looking for Steve and/or his car.

It is a great suggestion though, thank you to everyone for continuing to bring up things we might have over looked.

How about commercial campgrounds?

When did they start this? I ask because a couple of years back we raised money for a dear friend who way dying from brain cancer and her family was having a hard time making ends meet. We raised over $10,000 and at least 1/2 of that went through PayPal in the two month period. The person who was handling the money was able to transfer it with no problem. Have they changed since then?

There are different account limits and fees for personal, premier and business accounts.

from the pay pal site:

a PayPal account after November 14, 2002 are required to complete two out of three authentication steps (confirm bank account, enter Expanded Use Number, confirm Social Security Number) in order to withdraw more than $500.00 USD per month.

So it can be done but will be a pita to take more than $500 a month out, can take up to a week or so to confirm all the information.

I just found this on PayPal's website. Log into your account and see if it can be done. I'm checking mine now.

Edited to add: I can't do it and I have a Verified Premiere Account.

You might check out dropcash.com. It works in conjunction with Paypal and basically gives you a fundraiser-ish interface where you can provide information and the public can track progress. Sometimes seeing that sort of thing encourages people to want to participate. Here's an example of a pretend one that I made a few years ago.

Very untrue - I fly a lot in this area with friends - small planes and gliders - and you can spot cars very well and identify them. If you have binoculars you can read license plates. A helicopter would be even better as it can hover and find a place to land closer to anything suspect.

Did you send them two forms of Identification? I have the business account and I sent them a copy of my social security card, they had sent me a letter and such. But even before I did that I was a verified account because they had verified my checking account.

Anyway, back on the subject, last night I went to the Mobil site and got the list of any Mobil/Exxon stations in a 200 mile radius and Mobil lets them each set up a website and any that had emails I sent one to asking for their help with a link to the myspace page. Tonight I was going to do the same with Shell BUT they don't have webpages or emails so tomorrow I am going to call them, talk to the managers and explain the sitiuation. I have free long distance so all this is costing me is time. Anyone else that has free long distance might be able to hit another set of business, does Steve eat Fast Food, healthy? Maybe call Pharmacys, Grocery Stores, things like that. Motels too. Anyone wanna head up an organizing party so we don't end up calling the same place 4 times in one day?

Actually, depending on altitude, a small plane, or especially a helicopter WOULD be able to pick out a silver car, although you likely wouldn't be able to read the plates/see for sure that it was his. But if the observer had a decent set of field glasses, this might be a viable idea once an area has been identified that needs searching. If a car was found that looked promising, someone on the ground could be sent to check for sure. However, due to the expense and hit or miss nature of aerial searching, I would not turn to this until you had a specific area in mind to search.

I do have access to planes and a helecopter through friends, but flight time is really expensive. If we get a good lead on a specific area I should be able to call in a favor though.

if the paypal/dropcash fund gets set up maybe us all donating money can help to pay for the helicopter time (Im assuming gas and such) along with helping Steve's family that's in AZ. Or even if you have one!
