I will be traveling to Cape Town in the near future and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for excursions. I was planning on taking a tour to the Cape of Good Hope and also a 1-day guided safari. Any other suggestions? Also any insights into places to avoid for safety or other reasons would be appreciated.

The Cape of Good Hope tour is awesome, you will definately get some awesome shots there.

Cape Town isnt as bad as Johannesburg in terms of crime, although that doesnt mean you dont have to be vigiliant. You could maybe also enquire about boat trips from Houtbay to Seal island (would also make for some awesome shots and you may very well see a great white)

Then, if you havent been up Table mountain, do it, but go very early, trust me. The queues are ridiculous.

If you're renting a car, it may also be worth your while to go up to signal hill (heard it's dangerous there at night, I havent experienced it yet) But early morning and dawn should be fine. It'll allow you shots of the entire Cape Harbor, Cape Town, and coastline leading up to the westcoast.

From there, travel backwards toward Camps bay (very posh, trendy, but extremely beautiful beach) and travel over Sir Lowry's Pass further on to reach awesome little picturesque 'dorpies' along the way.

Are you only looking for tips from South Africans (as per your title) or would tips from those who have travelled there also be of use?

How many nights do you have there in total?

There is soooo much to see and do in this area...

Table Mountain is a must - you can either hike or cable car up/ down. If hiking, I hear a good route is from Kirstenbosch Gardens - another nice place to visit if you enjoy parks, plants and want to chill out, perhaps with a picnic.

Robben Island is a popular visit for those who want to learn something of the history. It's also inspiring to see former inmates and former wardens working side by side as guides for the visitors and putting the past behind them.

You can easily spend a day doing a tour of the peninsula - down one side to the tip and back up the other side - plenty of places to stop off and lots of beautiful scenery. For those who like wildlife the penguins of Boulders Beach are a worthwhile stop.

In Cape Town itself you can easily spend a day visiting the sights (castle, District Six museum (which I sadly missed), Bo Kaap, the markets and just touring the rest of the city's distinct areas).

If you're into wine, beautiful landscapes and good food a tour of the neighbouring Winelands would be worthwhile too - not just to sample wines but to visit the beautiful vineyards and towns and enjoy a meal or two at one of the many high-end restaurants.

A safari is perhaps the most difficult since you're at the wrong side of South Africa for the best game parks but there are a number of private parks in the Cape region that offer a taster. Addo, a national game park, is too far to bother for one day. I can't help further on this one as we spent 5 weeks in South Africa so we did a long tour of the game parks after we'd done a long tour of Cape Town and the Garden Route.
