This is the first time a free study has been available to me and I would like to enter. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or would like to share their experiences. I'm thinking about things like, do you go shoot specifically for a free study, and if so how do you choose a subject? Or how do you pick through photos you've taken for other things to find a great entry? Any ideas about this (or anything else!) would be so appreciated. |

I would suggest you to check the Challenge History to see what the other Free Study Challenges went about. They are a great source of inspiration. Good luck!! :) |

well... in free study ix, i went out a couple of weekends looking for a specific type of shot... landscape, actually... because i never do landscape shots and figured a free study was a chance to expand myself beyond what i felt comfortable with... i was quite happy with the result and now have 4 landscape shots in my top 6...
last time, free study x, i just threw something together the final weekend and it showed...

It can be a month of just shooting for you, for the joy of it, and see what you get. Or you can try that idea that you've often thought about but never gotten around to shooting. Or take a couple trips to new shooting spots that you've been meaning to go to. Whatever. It can be a good motivator to get out and shoot though :-)
But...it will be a long month with many moments of indecision and second guessing, and don't be surprised if you are still frantically trying to get a shot edited and entered minutes before deadline! :-P |

very early in my days here and I was actually trying to get a DPC style shot(I obvioulsy failed a that) Now don't get me wrong I am not opposed to a nice flower shot but I like them dirtier.
come to think of it I may have been feverish:)
Edit to add that we only had 2 days to shot and enter that one.

For Free Study X I took the 'best' pic of the month and entered that. It was (and still is) my highest scoring shot.
I go on vacation this month and have a wedding late in the month - lots of images to be shot, gonna be hard to choose just one!

For my first participation in Free Study I thought we were to display something that we would work on really hard and even come up with techniques we never tried before. For that one I "studied" backlit shots in all possible lights I could come up with, took me 3 days to take/choose the right shot LOL! On the day of the voting I noticed most people had entered their nicest shots of the month, some really nice snapshots and whatever they wanted, oh was I disappointed. I learnt a great deal about lighting though :)
